The wearing of face masks or face coverings became compulsory for anyone travelling on public transport in England on Monday, June 15, and in Scotland on Monday, June 22. Here we explore the difference between face masks and face coverings and the printwear industry’s reaction to the situation.

At present, the World Health Organisation states that the widespread use of masks is not supported by high-quality scientific evidence. However, there are some settings where the use of a face mask could be helpful to provide a barrier against the spread of COVID-19.


WHO advises that governments should encourage the use of non-medical fabric masks or face coverings, which can act as a barrier to prevent the spread of the virus from the wearer to others, in certain circumstances. For example, where there are many cases of COVID- 19 or for people in the general public where physical distancing of at least one metre is not possible – such as on public transport, in shops or in other confined or crowded environments.
