The big news basically everywhere is nothing to do with the UK leadership ‘race’ – which looks more and more like two kittens fighting in a potato sack with each passing day – it is the cost of living crisis, and it’s global. People are being squeezed without mercy and buffeted by forces outside the understanding of most of us. We’re caught in the perfect storm and we certainly don’t have SatNav to guide us to calmer waters.

This means of course that consumer spending is dropping. People still want to have fun in their lives though, and they still want to spend money – they’re just finding places to trim, like the Netflix subscription, going without the mobile phone upgrade, that kind of thing. Because this industry is all about making memories, giving people the platform to create shared experiences they can treasure for life, there is a small degree of insulation, but customers will be wowed now by what you do to retain their interest post-visit, and by your service when they’re with you. That doesn’t mean we have to be lapdogs to our customers – just absolutely on the ball, and by creating a positive culture from the top of the company where you team are trained and confident, that transmits to the customer, and everyone benefits. The thing that has been largely ignored in the press, however, is that all of the businesses in the country are being squeezed by precisely the same market forces that are making everybody’s lives so difficult. The cost of food and energy in hospitality is cutting margins that were already slim down to next to nothing; hopefully everyone can hang in there until the worst of this passes. Because we are optimistic animals, and we have to believe it will… Hang in there. People need you! Jon
