Where the magic happens

Park World explores Toverland’s Avalon area as its four new attractions lead to a record-breaking attendance record for the Dutch amusement park

T

he Dutch word for ‘wizardry’ is ‘toveren’ - and so the magical ‘Wizard Land’ that is Toverland could not be more aptly named, for Toverland takes its guests deep into a fantasy world through its six different realms. Located in the Netherlands’ town of Sevenum, the magical amusement park

promises enchantment for all the family as they travel through Wunderwald, tobogganing at speed in Maximus’ Blitz Bahn; Land van Toos, the perfect place for children to enjoy rides such as the Toos-Express junior coaster; Port Laguna, a colourful harbour town; Ithaka, where the tallest, longest and fastest wooden coaster in the Benelux waits; Magische Vallei; an oasis of peace with water attractions and an epic roller coaster; and Avalon, a  And it’s Avalon which has pulled in a record-breaking number of visitors for

the park. Following its expansion in 2023, the park commented: “In 2022, it was the first time in its history that Toverland broke the magical barrier of 1 million guests per year. By continuously investing in seasonal events and the extension of opening times it wants to realise further growth of visitor numbers. Toverland also has the ambition to become a short-time destination resort, with the addition of leisure accommodation.”

Record-breaking

Toverland has since enjoyed another record-breaking moment: last year, 1,165,000 people visited Toverland, an increase of 13 percent compared to 2022. Jean Gelissen Jr, Toverland’s general manager, said: “Not only did we welcome more guests than ever before, but also our guest satisfaction was

higher than ever before - an insane combination of which we and our entire ‘Toverteam’ are very proud!” “This expansion has turned Avalon into a full-fledged theme area, which

allows us to attract a broader target audience and makes visitors stay a lot longer in this area,” Gelissen Jr added. So, what exactly can now be found within the Avalon realm that has caused

visitor numbers to reach an all-time high? There are two new large and two smaller attractions, plus extra play areas and various interactive experiences which have been added alongside. While Toverland also credits its extended opening times and new seasonal

events such as the Now You’re Mine haunt experience in helping it to achieve this record, the park has made a not-inconsiderable 11.5 million euro investment into the Avalon realm with its expansion project. Immersive theming and quality of attractions were the priority in the

development of the Avalon expansion. Toverland owner Jean Gelissen Sr. and general director Jean Gelissen Jr. jointly opened the new attractions officially on 1st July 2023. “By creating this expansion, we added more thematisation, dynamic and attraction value to this area. Avalon has grown up”, says Jean jr.. “We have worked with passion and craftsmanship on this expansion and I’m so incredibly proud of the end result.” 

ride Merlin’s Quest and a serviced restaurant called The Flaming Feather. As of July 2023, the realm also includes two large and two smaller

attractions. The large attractions are called Dragonwatch, a family friendly drop tower (and Intamin’s newest Parachute Tower) that takes visitors to a
