School leaders need a national strategy for teacher recruitment and retention, says NAHT

Commenting on the publication of statistics on Initial Teacher Training (ITT) places, Russell Hobby, general secretary of school leaders’ union NAHT says: “the increase in training places seem very positive, but we must be clear of the regional differences these statistics mask. We know that teachers are likely to begin their teaching career where they train.

“Without a national strategy for teacher recruitment and retention, it is not clear whether the meeting of individual targets in a given year adds up to stability for the system over the longer term. We need the next government to take up our call for a national strategy to deliver the good quality teachers schools need.”

James Bowen, director of middle leaders’ union NAHT Edge, says “official data often masks the difficulties schools face on the ground, including issues of quality and regional disparities. NAHT’s annual survey of members shows the difficulties schools face in recruiting to all posts. Only when assessing retention and recruitment together can the next government ensure schools have the teachers they need.”

Kip in a Ship: Sleep in a sailor’s bunk aboard HMS Belfast!

School and youth groups can now experience the unique opportunity of staying overnight on this historic ship in the heart of London. The Imperial War Museum is welcoming adventurous groups (aged 7-18 years) to experience a night on board HMS Belfast to uncover the ship’s fascinating history that extends to the Arctic convoys, D-Day, the Cold War and Korea.

The unique sleepover experience, Kip in a Ship, offers groups the chance to immerse themselves in HMS Belfast’s history by sleeping in real sailors’ bunks, ducking through hatches and climbing up and down ladders to explore this historic ship.

Included in the price is a continental breakfast and a morning learning session where children can discover the stories of the crew who lived and worked on board this warship during D-Day and beyond. Moored between London Bridge and Tower Bridge, ‘kippers’ can soak up London’s iconic skyline and the ship’s central location makes it an ideal base for further exploring the city. To enhance the experience further ‘kippers’ can book an additional evening package (for an £12.50 extra per person) including an exclusive

guided tour of the Flag Deck and Captain’s Bridge and hands on activities. These include learning semaphore and flag signals, and designing a mess mug for enjoying a hot chocolate – one of the sailors’ favourite drinks on board! Skills acquired in this workshop can contribute towards the Scout and Girl Guide Communicator Badges.

According to Diane Lees, Director General, Imperial War Museum: “Sleeping in real sailors’ bunks and standing where the crew would have stood is a unique opportunity for school and youth groups. In our Centenary year, this is the perfect time to find out more about the largest item in IWM’s collection – as well as soaking up the fantastic views from this central London location.”

Kip in a Ship costs £47.50 per person per night including VAT and the minimum party size is 20. The additional evening activity can be added for an additional £12.50 per person (includes all materials and an exclusive tour of the Captain's Bridge). Packed lunches and gift bags can be added for an extra fee.
