NEWS Olympic medallist visits Polwhele House

A school in Cornwall received a special visit today from three-time Olympic Silver medallist, Frances Houghton.

Polwhele House, near Truro in Cornwall, welcomed the World Champion rower for the morning in order to inspire and educate the children on competing at a high level. Houghton won silver medals at the 2004, 2008 and 2016 Olympic Games and was part of four World Championship-winning crews in the quadruple sculls.

Houghton is no stranger to competing at a young age, having first made the Junior team in

1995 aged 14. She finished fourth in the quadruple scull in her first World Rowing Junior Championships just a year later aged 15. Headmaster Alex McCullough was happy to host Frances, saying: "Having such an illustrious career from such a young age is so inspiring for our children here at Polwhele House. We encourage our pupils to pursue a range of sports, fully appreciating all the benefits to be gained from competing - including fitness, motor co- ordination, teamwork, sportsmanship, and camaraderie."

"We enjoy hosting sporting experts at Polwhele

House so we can make our pupils aware of the skills and training involved with competing professionally. Frances is a brilliant role model and we are delighted to welcome her."

TV presenter Hayley McQueen opens West London sports hub

Hayley McQueen, Sky Sports News’ lead anchor, recently opened William Perkin C of E High School’s new community sports hub in Greenford, West London.

In addition to the school’s 785 students, the grassroots site will also be used by local primary schools, and called ‘home’ by Middlesex FA Girls Centre of Excellence and local sides Greenford Celtic FC and Hanwell Town Youth FC.

As part of the project planning, William Perkin worked alongside the Middlesex FA and Ealing Council to compile a five-year Football Development Plan (FDP) – a long-term vision of how sport will be played at the new football hub.

Helping to grow the school’s post-curriculum programme and increase local community usage, the FDP will boost youth participation at the facility via the delivery of FA programmes, Just Play and Mash Up. Active Ealing’s Sports Development Officer will also deliver disability programmes in partnership with the London Disability Football Development Fund. Built alongside the school’s state-of-the-art all-weather pitch, the new two-storey changing room pavilion comprises: four team changing rooms; two officials’ changing rooms; a clubroom; kitchen facilities; spectator toilets and an office space. The clubroom will be used by a variety of sporting bodies as a base for coaching and officiating courses.

The project was made possible thanks to partnership funding from Ealing Council of £500,000, plus investment from Sport England and the London Marathon Charitable Trust. The William Perkin School Fund, which is generated from generous donations from parents, also made a significant contribution to this project.

School-led leadership qualifications provider expands

A school-led leadership qualification provider is to expand in a move that will make it one of the largest professional development organisations of its kind in England.

Outstanding Leaders Partnership (OLP) was established in the north west in 2012 and has grown to 20 teaching school alliances, trusts and individual schools, working in partnership to deliver school leader development programmes across the region. It has worked with over 900 schools – including some of the region’s most challenging schools – since its launch. The expansion will see two other school-led partnerships – Nottinghamshire based LEAD Academy Trust and West Hertfordshire Teaching Schools Partnership - becoming delivery partners under the OLP brand.

It means that OLP will encompass 48 teaching school alliances and MATs – comprising over 1,000 schools - using experienced leaders from across the partnership to deliver leadership development programmes in their areas and beyond.

The expanded OLP will continue to be led by a partnership of Best Practice Network, a national provider of training, professional development and support services for schools, trusts and early years providers, and Ashton on Mersey Teaching School, which is part of the Dean Trust MAT.

The Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy, based at Derby College’s Broomfield Hall campus in Morley recently won the Association of Colleges (AoC) national indoor cricket championships held at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

The team played four group games and topped the group having won three and lost just one. In the semi-finals, Derby beat Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College who represented the West Midlands and then faced New College Pontefract who represented Yorkshire and Humberside. Bowling first, Derby managed to restrict Pontefract to just 23 runs. Going into bat Derby

needed four runs from the final four balls which they achieved to win the title.

The Academy, spearheaded by Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff is a partnership between Derby College and Activate Sport.

Players receive dedicated cricket coaching every week as well as working towards additional qualifications to help them gain work and volunteer within their chosen sport. They also benefit from masterclasses from past England Internationals as well as trips to venues such as Old Trafford, Trent Bridge, and Loughborough. The team also play a series of fixtures against
