Career change opportunity for foreign language speakers

Langdon Park School supports parents with mental health and wellbeing workshops

French, German and Spanish speakers are being encouraged to consider a career change – training to become teachers in the UK. A major Government-backed drive is being launched to help address a shortage of modern language teachers in the UK.

It aims to open up opportunities for people with linguistic skills, whether they are living in the UK or elsewhere in Europe.

One year programmes – where each trainee will work and study at two schools – will start from late summer this year.

The programme is being delivered by the Sheffield Teaching School Alliance based at Silverdale School – an Ofsted rated Outstanding school in the Top 20 of comprehensive schools in England with a track record in modern language excellence.

Applicants must be graduates and go through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) to access National Modern Languages SCITT. Interview days will be held, and successful applicants will be given training in two schools during the year.

Teacher training will be balanced with academic study, leading to the award of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). All types of practical help, such helping overseas students to find accommodation, will be offered by the National Modern Languages SCITT. Student loans will be available – and there is the possibility of bursaries of up to £25,000 for successful applicants based in the European Union.

Pupils explore works of First World War writers on new battlefields tour

The First World War Centenary Battlefield Tours programme, designed to engage school students in active commemoration, has been extended to offer free literature themed tours to all secondary and middle schools in England.

The literature tours are a new and additional element to the government funded programme which is already being run by the UCL Institute of Education (IOE) and school tour operator Equity. The tours give students tangible insight into the lives and experiences of those who fought the Great War, a genuine understanding of its historic importance and why it remains enormously relevant today, 100 years on.

Schools interested in taking up a tour can send one teacher and two pupils on a four-day trip that will explore themes raised by writers including RC Sherriff, Michael Morpurgo and JRR Tolkein - as well as all the best known, iconic First World War poets such as Rupert Brooke and Siegfried

Sassoon. The tour will visit locations that inspired their works, including a day at the Somme, and culminate in attendance at the moving Last Post ceremony at Menin Gate.

Schools who take up a tour will travel with others from their region in the company of a serving soldier from the British Army, as well as expert Battlefield tour guides with a war literature specialism.

There are several tour departure dates available, including Friday 27th October 2017, Friday 16th February 2018, and Sunday 25th February 2018. However, any school wishing to take up the Autumn tour this year, will also have the chance to attend a special production of Journey’s End staged at Ypres’ iconic Ammunitions Dump. They will also take part in a pottery workshop to contribute to the development of the Belgian government’s new official art installation, to honour all who fell in Ypres a century ago.

Since the start of the year, Langdon Park School in Poplar, London, has hosted a number of parent workshops centred on stress management, mental health and wellbeing. The workshops, some of which were run by Compass Wellbeing, guide parents through the skills needed to help them manage a number of challenges including stress, anxiety, depression and low self-esteem and confidence. Mental health has featured heavily in recent news stories as an important topic of debate and with events such as Mental Health Awareness Week running from 8-14 May, the school recognises the significance of supporting parents and students with life beyond the classroom. As such, it regularly runs workshops throughout the school year on topics such as wellbeing in addition to other issues such as hate crime and how to keep children safe online. The Compass Wellbeing event was attended by both parents and members of the community in and around Poplar and explored the symptoms of anxiety and depression, how to identify them and the different support services available.

Nicky Mutale, Parent Support Practitioner, said: “It is our duty as a school to ensure that both our students and their parents are given the necessary support throughout their time at Langdon Park. Supporting topics such as mental health and emotional wellbeing, our workshops aim to increase awareness and reach as many people in the borough of Tower Hamlets as possible.

“As a result of the wellbeing workshops, a significant number of parents made self-referrals to receive counselling support which highlights just how important and relevant they are”. Richard Fitzgerald, headteacher at the school, added: “At Langdon Park we seek to serve our community and the children and the families that form it. These workshops not only act as a way of raising awareness of important issues that do affect people in every community, including ours, they also hopefully provide the right guidance and advice to support people who need that help.”
