Association of Colleges announces Principal of York College as President-elect
The Association of Colleges (AoC) has announced Dr Alison Birkinshaw, Principal of York College, as its President-elect. Dr Birkinshaw, who began her career in further education in 1984 at Nelson and Colne College, will take over from current President Ian Ashman on 1 August 2017. Dr Birkinshaw said: “It is a huge privilege to have been elected to the role of President and I am very grateful for the support of my fellow principals. Whilst I certainly
will not neglect York College, this role will allow me to act as ambassador for the sector, and I look forward to drawing the attention of Ministers and others in Government to the big difference colleges make to the lives of individuals, communities and employers. I will also enjoy paying tribute to the hard work of staff across the sector and the support colleges receive from the families of students, local businesses and the wider community. I will work hard to ensure that there is recognition that investment in the college sector is crucial so that young people and adult students can contribute positively to society. I hope I can make a difference and live up to the expectations of my fellow principals, although I know that the work of previous presidents will be a hard act to follow.”
The President serves for a one-year term working with AoC to promote colleges to Government ministers to influence their decisions when making policy for further education. They also support AoC’s Chief Executive in working together with other FE sector bodies to get the best for colleges. The role also has ambassadorial duties including visiting colleges and meeting staff and students.

Bridge College receives glowing Ofsted report
Bridge College has been awarded Good from Ofsted following a recent visit to the specialist college in Openshaw, Manchester.
Bridge College is an inspiring specialist college for 16 to 25-year-olds and is at the forefront of their field for developing skills, independence and confidence for each student with disabilities, complex needs or autism. The college is run by the Together Trust, a leading North West charity which along with specialist education, helps support people with disabilities, learning difficulties and complex health needs through fostering, community and residential care and autism support.
The report praised the tailored approach to learning that the college offers, saying: “The overriding focus on providing
individualised programmes to meet learners’ identified needs is very evident.” Ofsted also commented that the transition processes are exceptional, which is important to ensure young people are equipped with the skills to transition onto the next stage of their lives. Principal Lisa Duncalf said: “We’re thrilled with the result, it is great to have the hard work of all our staff recognised. The team continue to put our students at the heart of what we do and we will continue to support our young people to achieve their goals and reach their potential.”
Pupils win TV tour for classmates in Roald Dahl centenary competition
Pupils from two primary schools stepped into the exciting world of television at Discovery Channel in May after their classmates scooped first prize in a national Roald Dahl competition. Alfie Richards, 9, from Irthlingborough Junior School in Wellingborough, and Raiya Mann, 7, from Glendower Prep School in London were the winners of Discovery Education’s Sweet Inventions Competition, which encouraged children to step into the shoes of Willy Wonka by inventing their own sweets. The competition was held to mark the centenary of author Roald Dahl’s birth, and attracted thousands of entries from across the UK.
Irthlingborough pupil Alfie impressed judges with his design for ‘Magi-Choc’, a magical chocolate bar which changes shape and colour, while Glendower Prep’s Raiya created ‘Marvellous Morphing Melties’ - magical sweets which can make children shrink and grow in size. Alfie and Raiya’s winning designs will form part of a special exhibition at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Buckinghamshire later this year. The talented pupils took time out from their prize day to work with a professional designer, and see their artwork turned into posters ready for the show.
