Automation is the key


Casino International: Gun Lake Casino has selected PulpStream to manage leave of absence processes in-house. What is PulpStream’s core business? Romy Malviya: We are a business process platform. We help companies automate business processes, ensure compliance with existing government regulations, and make the processes operationally efficient. Generally, companies manage leave of absence using Excel or calendars, and they tend to handwrite all the documents. Big companies are spending more than eight hours on each regulated leave when in today’s day and age everything can be automated. We provide this platform to run the entire leave of absence process in an automated fashion. It’s important to know what type of leave of absence this


is. It’s not a type of leave of absence where the employee will be absent from the office for one day. It is the type where the employee says they will be absent for a month or more for whichever reason. When you go on such leave related to

health or caring for family members, there is a lot of documentation and calculation that needs to be done. For example, government regulations give employees 12 weeks, so if the employee took anything in the last 12 months, those hours would add up. Then you’ll need to calculate the balance, write a notice of eligibility, ask for a healthcare certificate, etc. It is a long process to administer protected leave particularly when adhering to compliance regulations. In any company, 10% of their employees are on a break or leave at any point during the year. So if you have 400 employees, you will process 40 leave of absences; if you process 40 leave of absences, that’s 320 hours going towards administering the leave. That’s where a platform like PulpStream comes in.


CI: How did PulpStream start? Did the company begin with automating processes? RM: Yes, that’s how we started and it’s in our name. Pulp is paper, and we are in the business of streamlining the paper-driven processes. We started first as a platform, we then built solutions on top of the platform. We did not originate as a leave of absence provider, and that’s where we are different to any company in the business space. We are the only company who can say to its customers that if they can think of it, our platform can produce it.


CI: I can understand why this would work in the casino industry because it is an exceptionally heavily regulated industry. Is Gun Lake the first casino you’ve worked with? RM: This is our third casino customer, we’ve worked with Commerce Casino, and Fire Keeper Casino as well. However with Gun Lake, we are helping them automate other processes such as managing employee relationships, running risk & safety operations, managing worker compensation claims, incidents and investigations, as well as leave of absence.

CI: Presumably this would have to be compatible with an existing CMS or reporting process already within the casino structure. What is the integration process and how long does it take? RM: I will use Fire Keeper Casino as an example as it is our most recent casino customer. At Fire Keeper Casino, we integrated our technology with their HRIS system within one week. PulpStream is an open API platform, and we are designed to be integrated. Our entire user interface uses the same API that a third-party can use to feed the date. We are an API-first company and that is the strength of our platform.
