A principios del año 2020, el presidente Nicolás Maduro
aprobó retomar las actividades de casinos de juego para generar divisas y empleo en el país, a pesar de que existe un decreto ordenando la clausura de los casinos desde hace 10 años por el fallecido expresidente. Hugo Chávez, quien, mediante un plebiscito, clausuró los casinos y las salas de bingo en el país. El anuncio del presidente Maduro se dio
con la noticia de la apertura de un casino internacional en el Hotel Humboldt, en Caracas, donde el juego se realizaría usando le criptomoneda local, Petro, en un intento para promocionar esta criptomoneda a nivel internacional. Asimismo, el programa del gobierno era
autorizar unos 30 casinos en el país, y al margen del casino en Maracay, ya se han abierto otros casinos en varios estados venezolanos, según reportes, usando el dólar norteamericano como moneda para el juego. El plan de Maduro de obtener divisas para
contrarrestar el boicot mundial contra Venezuela, liderado por los Estados Unidos ha tenido relativo éxito por el alza en el precio del petróleo debido al confl icto en Ucrania, lo cual aprovecha Maduro con un mensaje bañado en geopolítica. “El petróleo que necesita este mundo para funcionar está aquí
en Venezuela y nosotros en paz y en soberanía tenemos todo el marco jurídico para levantar, aceptar inversiones como las tenemos, y producir conjuntamente en empresas mixtas con empresas del mundo entero”, enfatiza Maduro. Mientras tanto, en el Casino de Ciudad Jardín, celebraban su primer aniversario con un mensaje de jubilación: “¡Tenemos muchas sorpresas y sorteos para ustedes, todos los días de esta semana de aniversario!”

Maduro’s plan to raise foreign
currency to counter the U.S.-led global boycott of Venezuela has been relatively
successful because of the rise in the price of oil due to the confl ict in Ukraine, which plays into Maduro’s hand, as seen by his comment with geopolitical undertones. “The oil that this world needs to function is here in
Venezuela and we are a peaceful and sovereign nation with all the legal framework to raise, accept investments as we have already done, and produce development together in joint ventures with companies from around the world,” Maduro asserts. Meanwhile, at the Garden City Casino, they celebrated their
fi rst anniversary with a retirement message: “We have many surprises and prizes for you, every day of this anniversary week!”
