Zytronic furnishes the new breed of casino games
Touch screens provide a tough, responsive player interface for the new breed of casino games, says Ian Crosby, Sales and Marketing Director, Zytronic Ltd.
A
s casino games become more skill based, and geared towards younger ‘millennial’ players, a new breed of platforms is emerging. These feature a powerful operating system, large format HD
monitors and an advanced sound system to provide a truly immersive experience. When millennials see a screen they expect it to
respond when they touch it, they have come to demand the heightened immersive experience they already receive from their hand held consumer electronics. And thanks to Projected Capacitive Technology (PCT) touch sensors such as those produced by Zytronic, it is now possible to provide
the same fast, reliable touch experience on screens of 40-85” diagonal as on a small tablet.
Durability and touch response PCT touch sensors offer a combination of proven
durability and excellent touch response. They are resistant to scratching, and have no conductive coatings which can limit service life. Manufacturers such as Zytronic are able to customise the design of the touch sensor in small quantities and with almost no tooling fee to provide exactly the appearance that the console designer seeks. For example, it is possible to create a custom screen printed touch sensor of unique size and specification, to enhance the appearance of the slot machine as a whole, with a frameless, edge to edge glass design. Such touch screens can operate from behind up to
10mm thick thermally toughened glass. This is a necessity for many casinos, as over excited customers can punch the screen during game play and the glass needs to respond safely, not breaking at all in most circumstances, but in the event of extreme impact, to shatter into small, relatively inert cubes, much like a car windscreen, and not dangerous shards. For example, Global Monitor, Mexico’s leading specialist supplier of screens to the casino game cabinet industry, experienced this issue due to a specific local tradition.
Scratch resistance Juan Manuel Sanchez Ramirez of Global Monitor,
explains, “Women in Mexico often kiss their diamond rings and touch them to the screens for luck. This tradition was quickly scratching the surface capacitive touch sensors and causing them to fail.” He replaced his screens with Zytronic PCT touch sensors behind a 4mm thick toughened glass panel,
