PROFILE WHO’S WHO | Ray Davies This month: Quanta’s COO

How did you first get involved with the gaming industry?

I previously worked as a Marketing Manager for the Isle of Man Government and worked closely with the eGaming Team organising events and press & public relations activity amongst other things. When the former head of eGaming left, I was invited to head up the operations and that was an easy decision to make.

What attracted you to this sector? It’s new, very interesting, very fast-moving and no two days are the same which adds a great deal of variety.

What are you responsible for in your current position?

 with running the day-to-day administration and operations of the business. In other words, I get involved in almost everything!

What have been the biggest industry changes you’ve seen in your time? It’s a fast-moving industry and I have seen quite a lot of changes but mostly in the areas of regulation, player protection, and compliance.

What are the biggest positive factors for your sector right now?

Quanta Lottery is based on the Ethereum Blockchain! Blockchain could very well have a game-changing impact upon all sectors including and perhaps especially eGaming.

And what are the negatives ones – the obstacles to growth?

For Quanta, one of the biggest obstacles to growth will be the lack of adoption of blockchain technology and the use of crypto-currency. However, I believe that adoption will continue to grow, especially with younger adults and usage will develop over time to be as common as emails today.

Looking at your entire career, what do you think was your smartest move? Firstly moving to the Isle of Man. It’s honestly a lovely place to live and whilst the job itself is stressful, living on the Island isn’t! Secondly, taking the opportunity to head-up the eGaming operations; it has truly been a fascinating and immersive experience which has led to meeting some very impressive people and working with some excellent companies, especially Quanta.

Do you regret taking any jobs? Not really because there has been a logical step from each job I have taken to the next and everything has led me to where I am today. Going back, I don’t think I would have changed anything.

What do you think the eGaming space will look like in ten years’ time?

eGaming will grow in tandem with changes in technology; therefore we have to look at how technology will change. In the near future it will be thoroughly immersive and in time involved in every aspect of our lives. In this respect, security will have to evolve and so too compliance and Regulations. I’ve started watching ‘The Good Place’ recently and – for those who can relate – ‘Janet’ is the future. More than just Alexa, Janet is an electronic on-call personal assistance capable of accessing and analysing myriad data sources and acting under instruction. Janet (or maybe  where the best odds can be found, the latest

line-ups and game news, player stats, s/he will monitor in-game play provide live commentary and even let you know when the next bingo or poker game starts, who the players are and even their form, (we’d have to draw the line at telling you how to play though!) where the biggest lotteries are and even buy your tickets for you. Clearly, games will evolve too with fully immersive multi-player ‘avatar style’ virtual reality gaming overtaking traditional gaming and virtual reality crowds providing the whole ‘virtual’ event experience. My really radical ideas are subject to idea-right I but are available for a small (ok, large) fee!

If you’d never embarked on this career, what other line of work would you have liked to pursue?

I like to build things and I think my own building firm or maybe woodworking workshop.
