wanted to mention this from the beginning because I see far too many moments where the “faces” of organisations depend highly on back-office research and don’t openly attribute appreciation to the support they receive. I have been guilty of it as well. Cliché train of thought? I don’t think so. How can we talk about joint vision and goals if we don’t share the fruit as much as the process? At the time of writing this, we are witnessing the most beautiful (or some people might say ugly) part of politics. It is about negotiation, power sharing and a chess-like strategic placement of political figures and functionaries. We are at the birth of new five-year terms for the European Parliament and European Commission. The culmination of the European elections in May. The European Parliament Plenary is about to start and we have the elections of the President and Vice-President thereof. Why is this all so interesting you ask? Well, the structure of the institutions will let you know whether your industry’s policy agenda will have a better chance or not; whether you might be in for some surprises which will affect your business; or whether as European citizens your concerns may or may not be addressed in the way you want. Take the example of infringement cases which are launched by the European Commission against Member States. Under Charlie McCreevy, the former internal market commissioner, there was a stronger inclination to take Member States to court in light of what were considered potential restrictive measures to gambling services.
