INDEPENDENT LIVING
Our 90 year old inspiration A
ccording to the latest Age UK factsheet, ‘Later Life in the United
Kingdom’, there are nearly 12million people aged 65 and over, with over 500,000 90yrs+ and almost 15,000 centenarians. Can you imagine reaching your 100th birthday? Well it’s looking more and more likely, with the number of centenarians increasing by 85% in the past 15 years. The 85+ age group is the fastest growing demographic in the UK and is set to double to 3.2 million by 2041 and treble by 2066 (5.1 million; 7% of the UK population). Here at Trojan, we know a thing or two about
Comment by David Mosley Managing Director, Trojan
celebrating the older generations as our founder – and my Dad – recently turned 90. There were many celebrations and being the determined type of guy he is, he still comes into the office every day as he likes ‘business as usual’. However, where things have had to change for him is when it comes to his living arrangements and like many people in their older years, he is still fiercely
independent, so we needed to look at alternatives for areas of his life that could prove more difficult, particularly in the bathroom. We soon realised there wasn’t a great range of accessible baths that were practical but looked good too. Sifting through limited brochures that we could find, the bathrooms looked sterile and unappealing, especially to a 90 year old who thinks he is still capable of climbing in and out of any bath! And that is how and why our Bathe Easy brand
was born. Reading frightening statistics such as ‘older adults who live alone are more likely to attend accident and emergency and understanding that 88% of the growth in the number of households between 2016 and 2041 is projected to be in households headed by someone aged 65+, meant that we wanted to be sure we introduced a range that addressed the needs of older generations. Being able to bathe in comfort and safety, without having to compromise on style and design, is central to our offering and ensures all family members, no matter what their age or physical ability, are able to Bathe Easy.
Trojan – A brand for the ageing population A
t present, the majority of houses that are being built do not account
for the UK’s ageing population and there is already a significant shortage of accessible homes in the UK, with the latest English housing survey showing that only 7% of homes meet basic accessibility needs*. While many see our older generations moving into care homes, only 3.2% of those aged 65 and over live in care homes, the remainder of our older generations live in mainstream housing, with 80% of them stating this is also where they want to stay in later life too**.
This is where home adaptations are crucial,
with practical improvements that allow for the continuation of everyday activities, such as having a bath or shower without assistance. 1 in 3 people aged 65 and over suffer from a fall each year^ and with those aged 85 and over spending over 80% of their time in their home, these falls are likely to happen in their everyday surroundings, such as the bathroom. Multigenerational living is also becoming more
widely recognised, with a National House Building Council (NHBC) 2017 report stating an increase of 38% of multigenerational households. So, no matter the circumstances, our Bathe Easy range has a host of products that address all
needs, from walk-in shower baths, to deep soak baths, through to power traverse baths and a concise range of accessories that are designed to keep all users safe in their bathrooms
