Maxtop hammers it home with training award win

Maxtop Quartz Ltd has been crowned winner of the Training Excellence category in the On The Tools Awards 2017, following a national roll out of its training programme earlier this year.

The trophy was awarded to Maxtop at a glittering ceremony, held at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham on Friday 20th October, for demonstrating a sustained commitment to training and development. The kitchen and bathroom worktop manufacturer beat tough competition from the likes of Clarkson Evans, the electrical apprentice employer and Mindset Training, a construction training company, to be named winner of the category.

D.W. Nye customers help

to raise £252 for charity Customers of the Kingsfold builders merchant D.W. Nye have helped to raise £252 for Horsham charity Born Free.

Throughout December, D.W. Nye’s eye-catching and edible Gingerbread House – baked and constructed by Horsham resident Kat Gianni – was on display at the depot. Local residents were invited to guess how many sweets were hidden inside it in return for a suggested donation to the charity of £1 per entry.

The winner with the closest estimate was announced as Kevin Winlow from Denne, who was only four sweets short of the actual total of 658. Depot manager Duncan Tidy presented Mr Winlow with a Luscious Hamper worth £75 courtesy of Cocoa Loco at Swan Walk. D.W. Nye Managing Director, Rex Nye, said:

“Congratulations to Mr Winlow and thanks to everyone who took part and helped raise funds for such a worthy cause. We are proud to be a local, family-run business so we are delighted that we have been able to support our friends at Born Free in Horsham.”

You are breaking the law if the products you are selling are ‘not fit for purpose’ and carry a CE Mark

A

fter the tragedy of Grenfell, in 2018 it will be our duty to keep the pressure on to raise awareness of non- compliant product on the market” says Yvonne Orgill, CEO of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association. At the beginning of a new year it’s a good time to remind all manufacturers, retailers and merchants of the importance of compliance within your product ranges. As you all should know, the Construction Product Regulation (CPR) makes it mandatory for companies to carry a CE mark on relevant bathroom products.

Dame Judith Hackitt, who was appointed by Government, led an Independent Review of Building Regulations and published her findings late 2017. These findings called on the Construction Industry to undertake a ‘culture review’ of identifying good, compliant product. Bathrooms form part of the construction sector. The BMA has been calling for some time for merchant’s and retailers to ensure they are only selling legal compliant products to the end user.

Take this opportunity to check your brochures, packaging and website to ensure you are showing your company is taking responsibility for compliance seriously. A manufacturer is breaking the law if it does not comply with the legal requirements of CE mark certification. You are breaking the law if the products you are selling are ‘not fit for purpose’ and carry a CE Mark.

If you cannot supply a Declaration of Performance (DoP) with your products, it must at the very least be available on your website. The more you can educate your customers to ask to see evidence of the CE Mark when they’re buying, the quicker we’ll eliminate non-compliant product from the marketplace.

With a proposed reform by Dame Hackitt of the current Building Regulations and accompanying guidance following her interim report, it will be up to you to keep on top of any changes, being a member of a Trade Body will help you keep one step ahead.
