INDUSTRY UPDATE WORKTOP FABRICATORS FEDERATION
WFF Launches Landmark Quality Mark to Protect Worktop Fabricators
designers, retailers and specifiers identify kitchenworktops fabricated safely – without putting workers’ health at risk. The move comes
T
amid rising cases of silicosis linked to unsafe working practices. The scheme recognises fabricators committed to safety, professionalism, and quality, while distinguishing those who compromise standards. Centraltothe accreditation are independent workplace assessments carried out by registered occupational hygienists. Participating companies promote the Lungs at Work project, providing workers with a pathway to medical screening if they may have been exposed to respirable crystalline silica. Enhanced health surveillance also ensures early detection of respiratory risk. The qualitymark applies not only to engineered stone but to all high-silica materials, offering the supply chain and retailers confidence that fabrication meets recognised good control practices. Accreditation status is clearly displayed on theWFF website, giving transparency and enabling informed compliance decisions. Fabricators must implement robustmanagement systems, control hazardous exposure, monitor workers’ health, and provide comprehensive training on safe handling and storage. The scheme aligns with BOHS and HSE guidance, with criteria continually updated to reflect best practice. Kevin Bampton, CEO, BOHS, said: “The WFF quality mark gives the
supply chain and consumers a clear choice. Buying from an accredited company means supporting businesses that protect workers’ health. Buying elsewhere risks a kitchen at the cost of someone’s life.” Dr Johanna Feary FRCP, PhD, added: “Silicosis is preventable but irreversible. This kitemark, with its focus on education, exposure control and early health surveillance, is a significant step forward in protecting workers.” Dr ScottMcGibbon, Director, Pvotal Consultancy, commented: “The WFF qualitymark signals a strong commitment to raising occupational hygiene standards and providing trusted, independently verified assurance. Alongside initiatives like the ReACT silica dust toolkit, it supports safer, healthier communities.” Set to roll out in the New Year, theWFF quality
mark is a game-changer for the industry, giving designers, retailers and fabricators a trusted benchmark for health, safety and professionalism in kitchen surface fabrication.
