Kiwa – UnderstandingWater Regulation 4: How KUKreg4 Supports Compliance

onathan Price, International Development Manager at Kiwa Watertec, explains what Water Regulations 4 and KUKreg4 means. The Water Supply (Water Fitting) Regulations

J

play a crucial role in protecting public health, safeguarding water supplies, and promoting the efficient use of water across the UK. All water installationsmust comply with these regulations, and when it comes to water fittings, Water Regulation 4 is the key reference point. Water Regulation 4(1) states that “every

water fitting should be of an appropriate quality or standard and be suitable for the situation in

which it is used.” Water Regulation 4(2) outlines the options available for demonstrating that compliance. Having appropriate certification in place is essential. It provides assurance to water authorities, specifiers, and contractors that a product has undergone the necessary testing and meets the required design and performance standards. Displaying a recognised certification mark also gives manufacturers a competitive advantage by clearly evidencing compliance. KUKreg4 offers a robust and reliable route

to demonstrating compliance with Water Regulation 4. All testing is carried out in an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory and certification follows ISO 17065 principles. Products undergo rigorous assessment and certification decisions are made by experienced specialists with extensive industry knowledge. As industry terminology continues to shift

towards the correct focus on “Water Regulation 4 compliance”, visibility and understanding of KUKreg4 is increasing. Importantly, the legal requirement is Water Regulation 4 itself - not the use of any specific commercial approval scheme. KUKreg4 is a fully recognised route for demonstrating that a product meets the regulatory standards.

Anothermajor benefit is that all certification decisions are made within Kiwa, meaning there are no external cut-off dates that could delay product approval. Kiwa’s wider European recognition also provides opportunities to streamline processes, reducing duplication of testing for certain product groups. Kiwa offers two levels of certification:

• Level 3 • Level 1+, a continuous certification option that removes the need for five-year renewals

Key takeaway: Water Regulation 4 is the legal requirement and KUKreg4 provides a credible, recognised, and efficient way to demonstrate compliance. For more information on these services, visit
