Franke Staff Join Forces with Groundwork to Enhance Local Nature Reserve
F
ranke has demonstrated its commitment to environmental conservation by rallying its staff to participate in a series of activities alongside environmental charity Groundwork, to improve the Irkside Nature Reserve in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. Seven employees from Franke’s headquarters in Manchester spent a day working with members of the Groundwork team to enhance the site as it gets set to welcome a surge of visitors during the summer months. One of the primary activities the team undertook was
‘Balsam Bashing’ which involved the removal of non-native Balsam plants. By clearing these plants from the site, the team created space for the reseeding of wildflower species. In addition, they were hands on in clearing the pond margin and improving the footpath by trimming willow trees to create an inviting and accessible environment for visitors. They also undertook path clearance work, involving the trimming of overhanging branches and the removal of encroaching grass, as well as enhancing the path's surface by filling voids and removing potential trip hazards.

THE BMA COLUMN
Sustainability matters: Enter the BMA Sustainability Awards 2023
ow in its third year, the BMA Sustainability Awards continue to reflect our dedication to promoting environmental stewardship and acknowledging the outstanding efforts made by our members in reducing their environmental impact.
N
Businesses globally are responding to climate change and tackling the challenge of improving our environment. In the UK, the Government has set its ‘Net Zero Strategy’, and Defra’s Plan for Water contains targets for water efficiency. These awards are our sector’s way of demonstrating what is being done to meet and often surpass, these national expectations. Reflective of those aims, with entries open to all full and affiliate BMA members, the categories for 2023 are the Carbon Reduction Award, the Water Efficiency Award, and the new Open Category Award. The Carbon Reduction Award recognises bathroom manufacturers who have embarked on initiatives such as improved energy efficiency, investments in renewable resources, and greening their fleets. The judging criteria for this award are the quality of the entry, the level of carbon abatement, and the execution of the initiative.
The Water Efficiency Award acknowledges those who go above and beyond to minimise water usage in the bathroom sector. We’re looking for exceptional entries that showcase innovative products and approaches to conserving water. The judging criteria for this award will focus on the quality of the submission, the potential for water efficiency, and the level of innovation displayed.
And finally, we have introduced the new Open Category Award. This category recognises various initiatives undertaken in the pursuit of sustainable practices. It could be anything from transitioning to a circular economy model to educating staff on water efficiency and inspiring environmentally-friendly consumer decisions through marketing campaigns. The judging criteria for this award will evaluate the quality of the submission, the positive environmental impact, and the tangible outcomes achieved. The entry deadline is 31st August, with the evening award ceremony on October 10th at the beautiful Carden Park Hotel in Cheshire as part of the BMA’s Annual Industry Conference.
More details about the awards and entry details are available via the BMA website.
