Price, quality and functionality driving the market for kitchen improvements


ccording to our recent Homes for Living research, nearly half of UK homeowners (45%) have plans for home improvements within the next two years, with 23% aiming to renovate their kitchens. While this is promising for the industry, it’s crucial for businesses to understand the driving factors behind consumer buying decisions for home investments.

The study revealed that one in ten homeowners are dissatisfied with their current kitchen, and 81% believe their quality of life would improve if the main issues in their kitchen were addressed.

Among the most disliked aspects of kitchens, insufficient storage was the primary concern for 28% of respondents, while size was an issue for 25%. Other common problems included cluttered worktops (19%), damaged and worn- out cabinets (17%), and inaccessible cupboards and shelving (15%).


For those considering kitchen updates, a quarter of consumers said a style overhaul was their main motivator, while quality improvements (23%) and lack of storage (19%) ranked second and third on the list.


Looking at the priorities for future kitchen upgrades, respondents emphasised quality and durability (19%), budget and overall cost (18%), function and usability (14%), and style and aesthetics (11%). Notably, 24% of participants expressed the intention to shop around for the best functionality within their budget, a 3% increase from 2022.


The significance homeowners place on their kitchens remains strong, and consumers are increasingly aware of how their homes impact their daily lives. The forthcoming Homes for Living report will offer more insights to aid those involved in kitchen design, helping them create better spaces and understand consumers’ new priorities and decision-making drivers in purchasing.
