SPACE SAVING

Storage has never been more important W

hen planning for a new kitchen, no matter how small or large, one of the most important elements to consider is the storage. As the hub of the home and a multifunctional space that, in some cases, needs to work for cooking, dining, relaxing, entertaining and even possibly home working, it ideally should have a place for everything and everything in its place.

As well as making it quicker and easier to find everything, be it cooking utensils, crockery, cookware, small appliances, baking trays, ingredients and all those elusive gadgets we can never quite place our hands on, it also creates a more ergonomic flow. Especially when storage is planned to perfection by having items where they are needed most, such as crockery cupboards and cutlery drawers near the dishwasher and larder units with foodstuffs and dried ingredients near

the cooker or hob. This results in a kitchen that is a joy to use for all members of the household while also creating a safer space to work in that helps prevent accidents, slips and spills. It’s not just kitchens that benefit from ergonomic storage. All rooms of the home can benefit from a better use of space and spatial planning, from long and narrow hallways to living areas, dining rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms and the home office. The best designs for each of these involve thinking carefully about the room’s function, what it needs to contain and where, as well as anything that doesn’t work with an existing layout and storage solution. Consider low cabinets and drawers for easy access, high cupboards for anything rarely used or needing t o be kept out of children’s reach – with lift-up doors for ease of use – and internal dividers and inserts for drawers to make miscellaneous items easier to locate.

Blum – Storage, Storage, Storage I

n these days of ever smaller homes, combined with increasing gadgets aimed to make life easier, there is huge demand for storage space that is organised so that all contents can be easily seen and accessed. There is nothing worse than having to empty the entire contents of a cupboard or drawer to find that elusive saucepan lid or USB lead.

Clever storage and fittings are at the forefront of kitchen design. Beyond the aesthetic wow factor of a brand-new kitchen, in the next 10-20 years of use, functionality will be key. Deeper, wider, higher base units can make an enormous difference, for example using 1 x 1200mm drawer instead of 2 x 600mm drawers gives 15% more storage. And with Blum runners you can rest assured that the drawer

won’t bow or break, as all Blum products are guaranteed for life.

To help keep storage organised and easy to access, Blum also offers AMBIA-LINE or ORGA- LINE, inner dividing systems. These two systems mean everything is in its right place, immediately located and accessible in full-extension drawers.
