BMA Green Recovery requires a reduction in water and energy waste

truly green recovery will require policymakers to look at reducing wasted water alongside energy efficiency. Last
month the influential Public Affairs Committee of MPs warned about routine water shortages within 20 years and the Environment Agency has warned of an “existential threat”. While the carbon footprint of our individual water use is small, if collectively we cut consumption by a third it would have the same effective as taking a million petrol cars off the road. Water companies lose over 3 billion litres every day through leaky pipes.
They are coming under increasing pressure to solve this, but with no quick fixes and growing demand reducing domestic water consumption is also on the agenda. Two-thirds of water use in the home is in the bathroom so designers, installers and fittings manufacturers have a massive roll to play. BMA members are engineering fittings to reduce water wastage and we can all point to the Unified Water Label to help consumers make an informed choice during the buying cycle. My concern is that consumers and policymakers have not yet joined the
dots between efficient bathrooms and climate action. The Green Homes Grant, for instance seems to focus only on energy efficiency and insulation. Together we need to insist that water efficiency is part and parcel of action to achieve net zero carbon.
