ONE STEP FORWARD...
If DTF was the focus at Fespa Global, it’ll be packaging presses at Drupa if all the pre-show ‘noise’ is anything to go by. Oh, and all things automated, of course. There’s a write-up on what you can expect from the upcoming event starting on p10, and I’ve flagged up some of the key introductions in the wide-format space so you can get properly planning your visit. There’s also an article on p23 bylined to Mike Boyle, HP’s SVP of large-format print, on how large- format PSPs can transition to the smart factories we’re anticipating they’ll become, so that you can better plan for that too!
Of course the other big topic being spotlighted at Drupa - and no doubt within your own business - is environmental sustainability. I think it’s clear to most of us that more action, and faster implementation of that action, is needed if this planet is to avoid climate catastrophe. Thank heavens so many PSPs and suppliers are of the same mind and increasing efforts to green-up. But - and I hardly dare I say it - are we beginning to see a slide in the other direction when it comes to customer behaviour?
I’ve heard a lot of rumblings from PSPs who have invested in extending their environmentally-friendly print offerings - and spent a lot of time and effort on educating their customerbases about them - to find they are gaining little traction when it comes to clients putting their money where their mouths are. Hollywood Monster CEO Simon McKenzie speaks out on the subject in this issue’s Talking Point on p16. The trend towards ‘greenhush’ is not a good one and could have something to do with the disconnect between customers’ rhetoric and reality when it comes to print buying. There’s more on that on p14. And we take a look at another unfortunate situation on p26 - the spread of ‘Neijuan’, a buzzword in China for a work malais that is apparent in the UK too. But the good news is that good management can change that.
Lots to think about …
