Working from home
Bringing company culture home
Steve Goodman, Field CTO at Content+Cloud talks about how technology can help create the company environment within the hybrid and remote digital work spaces using Microsoft as a working example.
How has culture and the modern working environment changed following the Covid-19 pandemic? The pandemic forced many businesses into hybrid and remote working models. The benefits of this profound shift remain and allow employees to have more time with their families and at home, generating new routines that are flexible and accommodate a better work-life balance. Now that offices are opening back up, there need to be
clear lines of communication between employers and employees when discussing new working arrangements. It is undeniable that many business cultures are adapting to the increased focus on digital channels, but the reduced in-person interaction has negatively affected some employees. Some find this shift in culture and working environment difficult due to feeling isolated and neglected, while others thrive. New starters and younger employees, for example, tend to value time with colleagues and managers, as this helps build workplace culture and is beneficial for personal and professional development. There is no simple solution that is one-size-fits-all. Each business will
need to figure out how its culture can thrive across digital channels, while ensuring the physical touchpoints are not lost, particularly for those who value them most. Avenues of support should be discussed and made available to employees for all situations, and the best way to do this is for all involved to be open and transparent about their needs.

Heading into 2023, what technologies will help progress the modern working environment to replicate company culture in the digital space? The main priority for businesses during the pandemic was to find and implement tools that would allow their teams to collaborate and communicate in the digital space. Platforms and tools like Teams, Yammer, and Slack were hastily implemented to maintain business continuity in the face of lockdowns and work-from-home diktats. Though these tools created an avenue for businesses to keep operating, there was not enough time to
assess the technology’s full capabilities and long-term impact. Today, many businesses have learnt more about their investments and
have made relatively good progress in optimising and effectively harnessing the technology they implemented. When it comes to employees, businesses have learnt that the technologies that best replicates culture through digital channels are platforms that focus more on strengthening engagement and improving employee experience. One example is the tailored experiences enabled through
Microsoft Viva, integrated with the Microsoft 365 suite, including Teams and SharePoint. This technology helps employees stay connected to their organisation and provides access to the resources that help them work effectively.
