Cybersecurity
into those that have the potential of exposing large amounts of sensitive data. Without company-wide awareness of what could be a phishing email that may be present in larger corporations, SMBs are exposed to a multitude of phishing scams.
Business continuity and relationships are key More broadly, depending on the scale of the data breach, a leading source of worry is how long it will take to get back up and running again post-attack. Breaches can be devastating and impair almost every element of your business. Loss of trust from customers, tarnished reputation and costly damage can put SMBs years behind in terms of progress. Relationships with customers and the loyalty that comes from them are
particularly important during this cost-of-living crisis. An attack during this time could see you lose that precious customer relationship. For SMBs, this is further complicated. What’s more, in industries that rely heavily on manufacturers and efficient production schedules, for example, this threat becomes even more urgent. Keeping everything moving without digital hitches is paramount. SMBs therefore need to implement proper cybersecurity measures and
educate their staff on where they should be more vigilant. The difficulty is that cybersecurity is a complex science, and not one that is easy to teach to a lay audience. Critically, the industry is densely packed with many competitors and has incredible market potential, making it hard for SMBs to know what products are right for them. Luckily, there is an unsung hero out there who can help mitigate these issues.
“You can’t be expected to do it alone” – the role of the MSP MSPs are the essential lifeline for SMBs who can’t afford their own IT staff or whose staff has minimal resources and/or time. The bandwidth needed to manage their business can often be all-consuming. Most importantly, they will focus on education and community engagement to become a real asset to smaller companies and build credibility as true subject matter experts. SMBs need to know they have a partner they can trust and offer solutions that are affordable, comprehensive, and effective. Letting people into your business can be tough, but when it comes to cybersecurity, you can’t be expected to do it alone. Creating a ‘Good-Better-Best’ model is a great way to
start improving service offerings from MSPs to the market. When it comes to cybersecurity solutions, a ‘one size fits all’ model won’t cut it. At a minimum, business leaders should implement EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) as the new standard for security. Layering that with Vulnerability Assessment and Patching, and then adding a complementary service like MDR (Managed Detection and Response), provides a complete offering that can be fully relied upon. Historically speaking, the cybersecurity market has
been dominated by a complex set of solutions targeted largely at the enterprise market. In this context, all too often smaller organisations simply don’t have the resources to figure out what IT solutions work best for them. They need to be able to turn to a partner they can trust: the Managed Service Provider. In today’s constantly evolving threat landscape, the solutions provided by global vendors give MSPs the ability to offer a cost-effective and simple suite of cybersecurity solutions for their smaller clients.

“Creating a ‘Good-Better- Best’ model is a great way to start improving service offerings from MSPs to the market.”
Every crisis needs a hero There is an adage that says outsourcing your problem won’t solve the problem. However, cybersecurity is an important exception. Every business requires efficient and non-disruptive practices to keep everything ticking along, nowhere more so than in the case of SMBs. Simply put, businesses rely heavily on one another’s products and services. Cyberattacks and cyber threats, therefore, need to be minimised and mitigated wherever possible to allow all the cogs to keep turning. Of course, learning how malware works and what types of protection
best suit your business is not easy, and leaders across the channel must look to the help of MSPs to guide them through this noisy and crowded market. If they do that, many small businesses – who previously may have been preparing for the worst during the cost-of-living crisis – can take solace from the fact that they have experts fighting their corner. Every crisis needs a hero, and in this case the managed service provider has gone unsung for far too long.
