What does it mean to be sustainable? Eco-friendly packaging is popular in all product categories. However, Paul DeFruscio, retired president of Chocolate Packaging Concepts says that when it comes to chocolate, it is somewhat difficult to build packaging that is eco friendly. He explains: “For the small neighborhood chocolatier, the sales volumes necessary to build and warehouse packaging that is eco friendly is generally too large and too expensive to warrant the investment in a series of packaging that is kind to the planet.” Using materials that are recyclable are the biggest

challenge. Printed paper, and plastic are the materials that make up most of the packaging that is used in the chocolate market. Starting with the printed paper, Paul says: “Printed paper for the most part is recyclable. I am starting to see the use of paperboards that are made from 100% post- consumer waste. Again, depending on the standards set by a municipality as to what makes a package recyclable.(please note, in the USA every city/state have set their standards on what constitutes a package that is recyclable). He adds: “Then you have the issue with the inks that

are used to print package, does your printer specialise in printing with inks that are friendly to the environment? Hot

stamp foil is a popular way for a chocolatier to display a logo. It’s my experience that these foils are not recyclable.” Paul advises that there also is a need to explore the use of

plastics in packaging for chocolate. “Bags and trays are two popular materials that can be used to package chocolate. When I first introduced trays into our packaging mix, I asked about using eco friendly plastic for the trays, my plastic supplier informed me that eco friendly plastics were too expensive and while they have tried to market them in the past, feedback from their clients was not positive, as they stated trays in eco friendly plastic was too expensive.”
