Cargill Cocoa Promise

Our latest Cocoa Sustainability Progress Report highlights key accomplishments, including: • Farmer Livelihoods: Through the Cargill Cocoa Promise, we help smallholder farmers build capacity, connect to resources and increase their resilience. Farmers in the Cargill Cocoa Promise continue to grow – from 169,893 in 2020, to 244,364 in 2021, up 44% in just one year. These farmers received training on good agricultural practices, helping them maximise productivity while also making a positive impact on the environment by advancing regenerative agriculture practices.

• Community Wellbeing: We are creating stronger, more resilient cocoa-farming communities by investing in the wellbeing of farming families. This includes working with partners to implement concrete solutions related to income generation, healthcare and nutrition, education, addressing child labour and other human rights risks, and improving access to economic opportunities for women and young farmers. Last year, we implemented more than 2,500 community projects and more than 600 community actions plans, with a focus on health, nutrition and gender equality. In addition, 11,359 women participated in 686 Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), as part of efforts to support income diversification.

Protecting the Planet: We are building a deforestation-free supply chain while protecting and restoring landscapes, improving cocoa farmers’ resilience and mitigating cocoa’s impact on the climate. In 2021, 70% of farmers in our cocoa direct supply chain were mapped using GPS polygon maps and geospatial data based on satellites. Further, we have provided farmers more than 1.2 million multi-purpose shade trees as part of our agroforestry efforts since 2017. In 2021 alone, we helped 5,400 farmers adopt agroforestry practices.

• Consumer Confidence: We earn the trust of those who enjoy our products by sharing clear, robust and transparent information on where cocoa comes from, how it is produced and the impact of our sustainability programs. This includes bringing digital first-mile traceability to scale. This year, 48% of cocoa farmers in our direct supply chain are delivering volumes through our first-mile traceability system and 100% of cocoa in our direct supply chain is traceable to the first point of purchase. Further, nearly half (49%) of our entire cocoa volumes sold were third-party certified sustainable. (This refers to certification standards such as Rainforest Alliance and Fair Trade.)

• Transformation, Together: We all have a role to play in the cocoa sector’s transformation, which is why Cargill works closely with more than 60 partners, including NGOs, producing-country governments and financial institutions. One example of this work is the Coop Academy program, which in partnership with the International Finance Corporation, aims to empower cocoa cooperatives’ leaders with training in business, digital finance, sustainability and commercial credit systems. In Côte d’Ivoire alone, 900 cooperative leaders representing 140 cooperatives and their 130,000 farmer-members have benefited from the program.
