Starch Moulding Systems

Developed in partnership with chemists from an international polymer specialist,

Fairgrieves’ 2021

lightweight thermoset starch mogul trays were significantly improved and re-engineered from their predecessors, with a smooth surface to hold any type of sweets, gum or confectionery. “We’ve been a leader in the confectionary starch trays market for many years and as a business which looks to stay ahead in the market, we revamped our product line last year as a way to reintroduce ourselves to the market and say we are still here, and still leading the way for confectionary starch trays,” said General Manager Barry Davidson. “The tray we developed has elements which are detachable and is almost 5kg lighter, so it is cheaper to produce and distribute, but importantly still has the required strength and stability to make it a long-standing product.” Highly resistant to chemicals and heat, Fairgrieves’ say their confectionery trays are able to operate at a temperature range of between 51°C to 121°C and are designed to handle the demands of high-volume confectionery manufacturers. Fairgrieves say its made from a tough and low-density food- grade polypropylene, which can also be tailored to any size or mogul plant production, and are easy to stack and clean. Every starch mogul tray is produced in a modern precision press for a consistent and high-quality finish. The relaunch into the confectionary starch trays market followed a period of business evaluation and product development at Fairgrieves, led by Mr Davidson.

“The consistency achieved by starch-free depositing ensures products have a high-quality appearance, taste and mouthfeel”

Ultimately the confectionery industry is moving towards a

period of functionality, with a renewed focus on preventing health issues. Immune support is another important driver of the supplements market. Covid, and the presence of other infectious diseases, means that many people want to boost their immune system: vitamins and minerals play a significant part. Avoiding infections is important in any market but is an imperative when access to healthcare is limited or unaffordable. Starch moulding works excellently for this new breakthrough market, and whilst it is an area the industry is moving towards, it does not mean to say starch moulding is not needed. Companies like Fairgrieves have understood the need to modernise and improve processes so as to meet the market demands.
