s consumers have become even more focused on health and wellness, functional confectionery has seen a huge increase in sales and this has pushed for advancements in the production of gummies and candies. Functional confectionery is an important segment of the market for products that support wellness, a fast growing lifestyle trend that includes achieving and maintaining physical wellbeing through good diet and regular exercise. “Supplements play an important role in this by providing consumers with the assurance that their intake of vitamins and minerals is sufficient, despite the difficulties that busy modern lifestyles pose to healthy eating,” explains Keith Graham, Baker Perkins Business Development Manager. Jellies and gummies are used to deliver vitamins, minerals, CBD, fibre, protein, Omega-3, probiotics and energy supplements for nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and sports nutrition sectors. Functional hard candies include antiseptics, menthol and eucalyptus oil to alleviate the symptoms of minor ailments such as coughs, colds, sore throats and nasal congestion.


Consumers are seeing much more choice in the market also


and supplements for general wellbeing and immune support have been joined by those taken for targeted purposes: brain health, heart health and weight management are typical.

Gummies and jellies are the preferred formats for functional confectionery. Starch-free depositing has made production more efficient, hygienic and significantly more cost-effective in every aspect than traditional alternatives: capital cost, floor space, energy consumption, labour and consumables. “The process minimises degradation of expensive active ingredients, and there is high accuracy throughout mixing, cooking and depositing,” says Keith. “ In the medicated

Functional confectionery motivated by lifestyle and personal appearance has also appeared – glossy hair and strong nails demand a healthy diet. Keith adds: “There is also sustained growth in vegan and vegetarian lifestyles. It is conceded that all necessary nutritional needs cannot be obtained from a vegan diet, and supplements are required; vegetarians often supplement their diet also.”


The functional confectionery industry has responded to all these lifestyle issues, which explains its rapid growth. There is also the undisputed fact that confectionery appeals as a non-pharmaceutical alternative to medicinal pills and capsules which suggest treatment of illness. Consumers of supplements are preventing illness, not treating it.
