The summer season is well and truly upon us here in the UK and we’re seeing a number of developments in the confectionery industry. This edition we report on two key acquisition stories: Prestat Group has announced the acquisition of the London-based premium chocolatier, Rococo Chocolates, and Mondelēz International has announced an agreement to acquire Clif Bar & Company, a leading U.S. maker of nutritious energy bars with organic ingredients. If you remember our last edition had an entire focus on the topic of sustainability, which led us to discuss a number of important topics from ingredients sourcing to sustainable packaging. For this month’s big interview we spoke to the new Director of Commercial Partnerships at the Fairtrade Foundation, Kerrina Thorogood, who gives us new insight into Fairtrade’s ambitions for a changing world, and using its key partnerships to create global awareness. Kerrina says “The Fairtrade standard review later this year will provide plenty of opportunities to showcase Fairtrade as the “gold standard” for both farmer and business partners.” Read the full interview from page 6.


Swiss technology group Bühler brought together over 1,000 decision makers from the food, feed, and mobility sectors at its Networking Days in Uzwil on June 27-28 to “accelerate impact together”. This unique, convening event was created by Bühler in 2016 and is held every three years. At the centre of the many keynotes, panels, and technology demonstrations is the question: How can we enable 10 billion people (by 2050) to live a good life within the boundaries of our planet?
