Custom automated tools

for total optimisation How does automation, digitisation and process control software help to improve the entire process of confectionery production? Kiran Grewal reports.

T

he demand for confectionery and baked goods is soaring at an exponential rate, typically due to the ongoing need for moments of luxurious relaxation as consumers are using these food products as a way of escaping the stress and

anxiety of modern life post-pandemic. With demand at an all-time high, especially with the trend for functional snacking, automation is being heavily relied on in the production process to maintain product quality, efficiency and flexibility. Rob Rogers, Senior Advisor Food Safety & Regulation, Mettler-Toledo Product Inspection says: “Put simply, automation is important because it makes confectionery producers more efficient. The ability to automate repetitive or manual processes means that manufacturers can make more products in a shorter amount of time, more cost- effectively. When applied to product inspection, another layer of benefit is added: not only can they make and pack more products, more quickly, but they can also be confident that the necessary quality standards, such as contaminant

detection and fill levels, have been adhered to. More products, more quickly, at the correct weight, with no loss in product, quality or safety standards.

The nature of work and production processes vary from business to business. Custom automated tools have to be manufactured and integrated into a system in order to perform varying workplace activities. A technology can only be integrated into a system when machines have the capabilities to perform certain tasks effectively. Moreover, industries require skilled labour to run the advanced production machines. Machines can match or outperform humans on a number of capabilities. At the same time, many other capabilities still need to be developed and adopted. A more refined man-machine communication can really help uncover the full potential of industrial technology. Stefania Montalti, Communication Manager of Cepi Spa “Confectionery

that provide high levels of accuracy in weighing, dosing and tracking processes, to ensure quality and safety in high volume productions. Operations must be efficient and
