Nespresso Boutique, Meadowhall Centre WINNING MULTIPLE

THE market leader in premium portioned coffee opened this 1,200sq ft store in 2017. I was looking to buy a Nespresso coffee machine. Inside the store, I was greeted by Emma, who asked if I needed any help. I said that I had seen Nespresso advertised on TV and asked if it was as easy to use as George Clooney makes out. Emma immediately got to work presenting the

Nespresso VertuoPlus, which was on promotion, priced at £129, rather than the normal price of £199. She asked if I’d like to try a coffee. She selected an Arondio capsule and explained

the barcode technology and she mentioned the spinning Centrifusion technology that creates a naturally formed crema. She demonstrated the VertuoPlus and made me a Gran Lungo, explaining that the machine offers fi ve sizes of coffee. Emma also mentioned the Nespresso Subscription scheme, which can be used to buy coffee, accessories and, if the credit builds up, a new machine!

Richer Sounds, 130 Whitham Road

COMMENDED INDEPENDENT

THIS store was opened in March 1991, the 12th to be opened by owner, Julian Richer. I was interested in fi nding out more about Sonos. Inside the store two members of staff were serving customers, so I began to browse. After a couple of minutes, I was approached by Paul after he had fi nished serving his customer. Paul got to work straight away and led me to a Sonos display, which featured a Sonos One, priced at £199, and two Play:5 models, priced at £499. He took an iPhone out of his pocket and began to demonstrate Sonos, fi rst streaming content to one component via Amazon Music, and then changing all components within the store to the same content. Paul explained that Sonos works with other music streaming services including Tidal, Deezer and Spotify. He also mentioned that units feature stereo pairing. He stressed that Sonos is easy to set-up and versatile and he said the Sonos app acts as the system controller. Paul added that there is a cheaper unit, the Play:1, which is priced at £149. He highlighted that the One model on display features Amazon Alexa voice control.

House, Meadowhall Shopping Centre

JOINT WINNING INDEPENDENT

BILLED as the retailer of cooking, dining and entertaining, House has four stores across the UK, in Bracknell, Norwich, Oxford and Sheffi eld. I was looking to buy a mixer. Inside the store, I located the small domestic appliances display and there were two suitable products. The fi rst was the Sage Scraper Mixer (BEM430SIL), in stainless steel, which was priced at £249.95. The second model was a cream Smeg model (SMF01), which was priced at £350. I was then approached by Dave, who was quick to point out that the Smeg model is available in six colours, which were displayed on the back wall of the store. Dave said it would be worth me joining the Home VIP Club, which would immediately credit my account with 100 points and he added that points are then awarded at the rate of one point per Pound.

Dave highlighted that if I bought the Smeg

mixer, I’d then only need 50 more points to qualify for a £20 voucher.

THIS store was one of 13 re-opened in 2013, following the purchase of the chain by entrepreneur and Dragons’ Den star, Peter Jones. I was interested in fi nding out more about GoPro, after reading about the action camera brand online. In-store, I was greeted by Pat, who asked me if I needed any help.

The HERO7 Black camera was priced at £379. Pat said the model offered 4K Ultra HD video at 60 frames per second, is waterproof up to 10 metres, featured built-in Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth and 12 megapixel still photos.

Pat then showed me a range of accessories for the GoPro, which included The Handler, priced at £29; and the Shorty, priced at £39. Pat also showed me the Tecno Action Camera accessory kit, which offered 10 accessories, including a head strap, selfi e stick and storage bag, and was priced at £19.99.
