Showing your true colours F
or a long time, the appliance market has been dominated by black. Black ovens, black hobs, black glass - you get the picture. Walk into almost any kitchen showroom and there has certainly been no shortage of it. But while black isn’t about to disappear, the way consumers are using colour and finishes in the kitchen is beginning to change. Appliances are increasingly being considered as part of the overall look of the room, rather than simply something that needs to fit into a gap between two cabinets.
Paul Whyte, Commercial Director at Bertazzoni UK & Eire, says one of the biggest changes can be seen in built-in cooking, where consumers are starting to move away from the all-black appliances that have dominated the category.
“With specific reference to built-in ovens,
there’s been quite a shift away from ‘black boxes’ which have been dominating the market for a while,” he explains. “People are opting for either classic stainless models or products with metal accents.” It is an interesting turnaround for stainless steel. Once the default choice for many premium appliances, it faced growing competition as black glass and darker finishes became increasingly common in modern kitchens. Now there are signs of consumers coming back to that more traditional look. But it isn’t simply a choice between black and stainless steel anymore. popular, especially across hobs and range cookers. Black may therefore still be black, but consumers can choose whether they want something glossy and reflective, mirrored or considerably more understated.
“Black has been popular for a while now, whether that’s high gloss, mirrored or matt,” says Mr Whyte. “It’s been dominating sales across all categories.” And consumers appear increasingly willing to experiment.
“Customers are definitely being more daring
when choosing MDA appliances and there’s much more choice available to them now versus what there was in the past,” he continues. “Whether it’s matt, bright gloss, mirrored or monochrome, people are picking to suit their individual tastes.”
