14 Quiet please! Poll finds that Brits would like to make appliances in their home quieter
Quiet Mark, the independent global certification programme associated with the UK Noise Abatement Society charitable foundation, has conducted a National Noise Report survey taking a deep dive into the UK’s attitudes towards noise in their home, in the wake of an increased ‘work from home’ culture. Over four fifths of UK Adults have appliances in their home that they would like to make less noise than they currently do. Brits would most like their washing machines to be quieter, at 45 per cent, followed by their vacuum cleaners (43 per cent), then hairdryers (23 per cent), food mixers and kettles (both 20 per cent). Since lockdowns were first enforced in March 2020, the number of Quiet Mark certified products listed on
quietmark.com has tripled from 350 to over 1,200. The number of manufacturers achieving certification has also increased from 60 to over 80, as more household brands join to show responsible achievements in engineering. Recent brands to have products achieve the certification include Miele, Samsung and LG Electronics. The survey, carried with more than 2,000 UK adults, also revealed that nearly 80 per cent of Brits say that it matters how loud an appliance is when purchasing one for their home, with three in five more likely to purchase an appliance labelled as “quiet” over one with no reference, when faced with two appliances of the same performance.
Well over half of respondents (62 per cent) noted that they are drawn towards quieter appliances. This is stronger amongst those aged 18-34 compared to those aged 55+. This love for quieter appliances transfers to the price that Brits are willing to pay – with nearly half willing to pay more for quieter appliances.
Again, this is stronger amongst those aged 18-34 – at 63 per cent – compared to only 30 per cent of those aged 55+.
This may have something to do with working from home where people need as little background noise as possible. Research from the British Journal of Psychology found that background noise kills productivity levels, with studies showing that workers can be much less productive when exposed to just one nearby conversation. The Quiet Mark certification is recognised globally. In recent months the company has received a growing number of applications from numerous leading international manufacturers, submitting their products for testing and assessment by Quiet Mark’s skilled Acousticians.

John Lewis’s Technology Director, Laurence Mitchell, says there are more than 10,000 searches a month for appliances that include the term “quiet” on the retailer’s website, with washing machines and kettles the most likely devices to be linked to the search.
By highlighting the distinctive Quiet Mark ‘Q’ logo as a trusted symbol, retailers are enabling consumers to make a more informed choice about quieter high-performance products they will share their homes with. This is a powerful example of collective customer care to combat stress-related noise – an important health and environment issue.
