IRIS ARSIC, our features editor, caught up with JANTINUS BOER at the helm of DIOSTYL COATINGS B.V. to find out more about the company’s joint venture (JV) agreement with Sayer Lack Mexicana, S.A. de C.V., which came into force this January and what the deal holds for both parties moving forward.
Expanding reach and technical know-how
The agreement, the first of its kind for Diostyl Coatings since its inception in 2008, is a new business model for the Dutch coatings company, which has solely worked with agents up to this point to sell its broad portfolio of can coatings. In the words of Boer, the founder and director of Diostyl, his company has so far largely focused on the European market, and it has also been operating via agents in Mexico, the US, Asia, and the Middle East. Delayed by the Covid-19
pandemic, it took some three years for the two sides to hammer out the details of their partnership. Asked what it brings to the table, Boer said that Sayer Lack
has invested and acquired 50% of Diostyl, giving it financial strength, cost savings, production facilities and technology that will bolster its position in the ever- changing can coatings industry. He underlined that Diostyl has
from day one only worked with bisphenol A (BPA)-fee solutions for two and three-piece cans. “This means that all our products are in line with regulations in Europe, the US and Asia.” As it so happens, Sayer Lack,
which was only operating in Mexico at the time, was on a lookout for a partner in Europe with technical know-how dealing with BPA-free materials. “They heard about us through common customers in Mexico who were interested in BPA-NI solutions in order to export to the US,” Boer

said. He went on to explain that Sayer Lack was focused on epoxy phenolic coating. “If they want to enter the US market, for instance, they have to do it via California, where it can no longer be used.” This is one of the backbones of the agreement. Diostyl, for its part, now has a
direct production facility for can coatings in Santiago de Querétaro in north-central Mexico. It also has enhanced laboratory capacity with Sayer Lack’s capabilities in Mexico at its disposal. “Our lab teams will now work together on developing new materials. We’ll have 10 people working on can coatings. If you compare this to our bigger competitors, it’s still a lot. And a lot of our strength lies in the R&D department,” he noted.
