New Conservative Party Leader and Housing Minister: BMF comment


Reacting to the news in July that Boris Johnson MP had been elected as the new Conservative Party Leader, John Newcomb, Chief Executive of the BMF, said: “I congratulate Boris Johnson on his election as Tory Leader in succession to Theresa May. I also wish him well, as the challenges ahead that he and his new ministerial team face, both internationally and here at home, are immense.


“Looking beyond Brexit to domestic policy, we seek urgent confirmation that solving the housing crisis is at the very top of his to-do list. Watching the coverage of last week’s final Leadership Hustings in east London, Boris wasn’t asked a single question about housing or home improvement. Indeed, little more than lip service has been paid to this area over the past 9 years, with 9 Tory Housing Ministers during that time.

Bradfords CEO appointed to Chair BMF South West region


David Young, CEO of Bradfords Building Supplies, is the new Chairman of the BMF South West region. David takes over from Julian Milligan, Managing Director of Kellaway.

In his position as Chair, David leads the BMF’s activities in the area. His priorities are to encourage more people into the industry, and also create a stimulating environment for debate among members. David said: “Recruitment is a challenge for us, with low unemployment in the South


West leading to issues when


recruiting and expanding; but this is a great industry, with many opportunities for training and development, and we need to get that message across. I am keen to drive engagement among the membership across the South West. I aim to make our meetings as interesting and appealing as possible and ensure key live topics are discussed and debated.” David also leads the Federation’s Bricks, Blocks and Landscaping forum.

The BMF has just launched its first North East Regional Centre of Excellence at landscaping supplier Marshalls’ purpose-built Eaglescliffe premises near Stockton on Tees.


The 29 BMF Regional Centres of Excellence make training courses and regional meetings more accessible to BMF members across the UK and Ireland. Peter Hallitt, Group Trading Director at Marshalls plc said: “It’s good to be working so closely with the BMF. We have many joint opportunities to address in our industry, not least of which is attracting, retaining and training new young blood into our sector. Working with the BMF cements our relationship with our merchant customers and the opening of the BMF Centre of Excellence at our Eaglescliffe plant is another step on a journey we are proud to be part of. We hope to support the BMF more with other locations around the UK.”
