UK CONSTRUCTION WEEK

STAY AHEAD OF THE GAME AT UK CONSTRUCTION WEEK 2019

Keeping ahead of the competition and having the most up-to-date product knowledge is a vital part of the builders’ merchants’ role. Yet it can be difficult to justify time out of the office with sales targets to achieve, customers to serve, suppliers to meet and emails piling up...

T

he internet provides part of the answer, of course. But the smartest solution for busy builders’ merchants is also about choosing days out that can be crammed with as much value as possible. By taking advantage of UK Construction Week (UKCW), supported by the Builders’ Merchants’ Federation (BMF), you get everything you need at one event. If you’re not yet registered to attend the UK’s largest construction event, here are eight things that ought to convince you to pop over to the NEC on 8-10 October.

Stay indispensable for your customers

When it comes to business you can’t beat the personal touch and the depth and breadth of knowledge that merchants can offer. Talking to your customers and giving them expert advice is a valuable part of the merchant experience.

Keeping on top of the latest developments, tools and technologies that will help your customers in their everyday jobs will ensure you remain their first port of call for advice. With this in mind, UKCW, has added a new Innovation Station to this year’s show. This is a demonstration area specifically for power tools. You’ll be able to see the latest biscuit jointers and heavy-duty bench grinders from top trade brands in action. You can also pick up tips from the experts on how to get the most from their range, and you can then pass this knowledge on to your customer base. Not only can you try out the latest products, but you can also cut a deal with the manufacturers as show discounts will apply.

Run your own building site And if you really want to get under your customers’ skin, don’t miss Coventry University’s immersive construction site experience. When did you last get to run a building site? The Coventry University site simulator is hailed as one of the most powerful experiences of any construction show. If you are feeling brave you can take on the role of the site manager and have real actors approach you as disgruntled members of the public. Not for the faint hearted!

This offers bespoke pipework systems with complete product testing as standard. Did you know its HDPE soil system is the only range in the UK to be certified with a British Standard kitemark?

Brush up on products At UKCW there are over 600 exhibitors with a wide range of products on display. This is the ideal environment to brush up on what is available in the market and to forge new supplier relationships. The more product knowledge you have the more valuable you are to your customers.

The Build section, sponsored by Easy-Trim, is a ‘one-stop shop’ for builders’ merchants and features exhibitors offering the latest solutions for roofing, cladding and insulation, doors, windows and glass as well as tools and software. Meanwhile Timber exhibitors will have a wide range of innovative timber products on show including new ranges of cladding, mouldings, skirting and flooring. Marley Plumbing and Drainage, which only sells through the merchant network, will be on hand to discuss its new fabrication service.

Rawlplug is celebrating its 100 years of expertise in fixings, fasteners and tools. While Weber will be launching an all new product specifically aimed at the Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) market. You will need to be there to find out more. Marsh Industries will be launching their new acoustic vibration reduction unit, Whisspurr, which is designed to reduce noise and vibration from diaphragm compressors.

Join the debate

Hosted by BBC Breakfast’s Steph McGovern and architect, TV presenter and founder of MOBIE George Clarke, head to the UKCW main stage to hear from industry leaders and expert speakers. We’re expecting lively discussions and debates, covering many of the issues of the day including digital innovation, MMC, sustainability, diversity, housebuilding, productivity and skills.

There has been a big focus on mental health in construction and that theme will continue at UKCW. On 8 October the main stage will host
