SUSTAINABILITY

ENVIRONMENTAL WARRIORS

BMJ talks to Andrew Simpson, national commercial director, packed products for Hanson Cement, about how the company is enabling sustainable construction throughout the supply chain.

I

t is clear that the environment is of growing importance and action must be taken to reduce the impact we all have on it. As one of the UK’s largest suppliers of packed cement, aggregates and construction materials Hanson recognises that it has a duty of care towards the environment and place sustain- ability at the heart of our business.

That’s according to national commercial dirctor Andrew Simpson who says: “Our aim is to provide products and services that enable sustainable construction. From the design and manufacturing process through to delivery, storage and use of our products, we are committed to working sustainably throughout the supply chain to offer solutions that will meet the requirements of our customers and provide resilient construction that is less harmful to the environment.

“The BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing of Materials (RSM) standard is in place at all of our production sites and we continue to develop products that support sustainability throughout their lifecycle and deliver a low carbon impact through reduced energy, greater use of recycled content, or reduced raw materials. Investing in energy efficient and clean plant plays a crucial part in this process and we have made significant

investments to improve efficiency at our sites to help secure customer supply.

“An upgrade at our Padeswood cement works in North Wales, where the first phase of a £24 million investment programme has been completed, for example, enhances production capacity and efficiency as well as cutting energy use. It includes the installation of a vertical cement grinding mill, capable of producing up to 650,000 tonnes of cement a year, as well as reducing energy consumption for this part of the production process by around 30 per cent due to the efficient grinding process.

“Three new rail cement silos have also been installed alongside the site’s existing railhead. This integrated delivery solution will allow up to three trains a week to be loaded for deliveries to Hanson depots in London, Bristol or Glasgow. The new silos will significantly reduce the transportation of cement produced at Padeswood to customers by road, saving on fuel consumption while reducing emissions. The plant also uses a kiln, specifically designed to burn alternative fuels and there are further upgrades underway in its capability to use recycled paper and plastics as fuel.”

Simpson says that, as well as improving plant efficiencies, Hanson aims to reduce its

impact on the environment through the materials supplied.
