OPENING UP THE INDUSTRY TO THE NEXT GENERATION
The next phase of the Maddie Rose Campaign launches this month, and aims to expand on the pilot scheme to open up the sector to more young people.
NAME A CAREER and chances are there will be a job within the UK builders merchanting and materials manufacturing industries that will lead to that career.
Selling, buying, marketing, engineering, design, product development, logistics, planning, warehouse management, human resources, finance, driving, information technology, customer service: these are all possible career paths within the sector.
Yet, for too long, the industry has not really been seen as offering a wide range of career options, instead tending to be lumped in with The Building Industry by students, parents, teachers and careers advisors. There have been a number of campaigns in recent years which aim to try and change the perception of the sector, and to encourage more younger people to consider it.
The Maddie Rose Campaign, is a pan-sector initiative spear- headed by the Construction Youth Trust which aims to highlight the huge variety of career options available in both merchanting and manufacturing. It was launched in memory of Maddie Hollamby, marketing executive for Keyline, who was committed to opening up the industry to encourage more young people to develop their careers as she was starting to do. Last year, September 22nd was designated Maddie’s Day, a day when her friends, family and colleagues celebrated her life, and flooded social media with her image, to raise money for the Construction Youth Trust, a cause Maddie was passionate about.
Since then, the Campaign has developed a Hidden Careers Schools Programme to engage
8
more than 200 pupils across a number of pilot schools and colleges. It has also arranged work experience sessions to allow young people the chance to see for themselves what a range of career options in merchanting might entail.
Hidden careers The Hidden Careers Programme involves live sessions, going into schools to introduce pupils in Years 11 and 13 to the wide range of career options on offer within the sector. The sessions aim to be interactive, engaging and dynamic, aiming to uncover the variety of careers and the challenge some of the stereotypes and misconceptions about the industry.
Construction Youth Trust is always looking to work with employers who want to host young people on work experience placements, create apprenticeship opportunities and provide entry level jobs.
It is able to help facilitate early careers opportunities at whatever stage an organisation is at, whether it might be looking to fill spots on existing schemes, or need support developing programmes.
The Trust is able to offer its expertise and connect employers and organisations with a pool of diverse young talent interested in a career in the construction and built environment industry. Work experience is such an important part of a young person’s career development, as it’s often their first experience of the world of work. The chance to immerse
themselves in an organisation can have a huge impact on a young person’s future career decisions - it could even be the lightbulb moment when they realise what they want to do.
