INDUSTRY VOICE
BMF backs Edinburgh’s first Green Home Festival
The BMF threw its support behind the Green Home Festival, a new five-day event designed to provide practical advice and assistance to help Scotland become a net zero economy, which took place on August 8-12 as part of the famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
The Green Home Festival was organised by the Construction Industry Collective Voice (CICV) of which the BMF is a founder member. The BMF says the Green Home Festival highlighted the important role that construction, house-building and property repair, maintenance and improvement (RMI) can play in helping Scotland to achieve its
net zero ambitions in future years. Patrick Harvie MSP, the Scottish Minister for Zero Carbon Buildings
was the Keynote Speaker at the launch of the week-long sustainability event on Monday 8 August.
Patrick Harvie MSP said: “This inaugural Green Home Festival is greatly to be welcomed and its organisers, the members of the CICV, warmly congratulated on the initiative. The climate emergency is already upon us, and if we’re to stand a chance of preventing its worst consequences we need both
government and industry to support a transformation of our homes and buildings. Many of the actions and new ideas needed are being advocated by the expert speakers and presenters over the week-long Green Home Festival programme.” The programme combined in-person sessions - at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors at 10 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh – and on- line webinars, with content geared to homeowners, property professionals, housing associations and local authorities. Each session offered hands-on guidance to help people reduce
BMF acts to cut members’ energy costs
With soaring energy prices affecting every sector of UK society, the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has partnered with Full Power Utilities to help BMF Members reduce their energy costs through a new tailored service, BMF Energy Plus.
BMF members will have access to a pool of suppliers, including some that do not sell directly to the end user, as well as a range of different procurement strategies to help them find the best possible contract for their usage.
Understanding how consumption patterns impact the price of energy is key factor in the process and the BMF has secured a number
of exclusive benefits to help minimise costs. These include a free energy contract review to provide impartial advice on existing tariffs and identify any billing errors, and a kVA analysis report covering all ‘half hourly’ supply points to ensure allowances are optimally set for full utilisation.
A further aim is to develop a BMF Buying Basket to harness the collective buying power of the BMF membership to achieve more competitive rates. This is a longer-term project, but the more companies that join the BMF Energy Plus service, the greater the negotiating power will be.
Kestrel joins the BMF
UPVC fascia, cladding and roofline manufacturer Kestrel has joined the Builder’s Merchant Federation (BMF). The move follows a period of growth for BMF, which now has 850 merchant and supplier companies. Together, they have combined sales of over £44bn and employ over 225,000 people in the building materials industry.
Owen Thorogood, Kestrel sales and marketing director, said: “Having started out in
38
builder’s merchants, I know the value of the support, training, advocacy and insights available through BMF.”
“They have really stepped up during the difficult years of the pandemic, which was such a difficult time for independent merchants. Kestrel is really proud to support an organisation that is showing such leadership in the industry.” Oz Bham, business
development manager for the BMF, added: “We are delighted
to have Kestrel join BMF as a supplier. The value of the BMF starts in its membership and the combination of merchants and suppliers like Kestrel makes a stronger, united voice for the whole industry.”

their carbon footprint and become more energy efficient. Brett Amphlett, BMF Policy and Public Affairs’ manager, added: “We are pleased to have supported the Green Home Festival which saw industry experts share their knowledge and experience to inform and explain the actions we can take to improve the thermal and energy efficiency of homes and workplaces.
“We encouraged BMF members to attend the on-line sessions, and hope that many visitors in Edinburgh were interested in finding out how to do their bit for net zero at the live sessions.”
