Price inflation drives Q2 record merchant sales The BMF’s Builder Merchants
In terms of
Building Index (BMBI) latest report on sales of building materials in the UK, once again underscores the impact of price inflation on the sector.
Building materials supplier CEMEX has added 10 new lower emission tippers to its fleet. They have upgraded safety features, a higher payload for increased efficiency and a step change in decarbonisation of its delivery fleet.
The new Volvo FM 460 8x4 tippers, which will feature CEMEX’s Future in Action branding, will work out of CEMEX’s depot in Angerstein and be used to deliver aggregates and sand to construction sites across the capital.
Thanks to their lightweight aluminium body, the business will be able to increase the amount of material transported in each load, while the engine meets the Euro 6 exhaust emissions requirements.

Overall sales revenue in Q2 2022 was the highest since the BMBI started in 2015 but, just as in the first quarter of the year, this was largely driven by price inflation rather than volume growth. Volume sales were -11.3% lower, while prices increased by +17.3%.

Alan Johnson to speak at BMF Conference 2023
The BMF has announced Alan Johnson, the former Labour MP and Cabinet Minister, as the first keynote speaker at the BMF All Industry Conference 2023, which takes place in Istanbul next June. Johnson was General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union before entering Parliament as Labour MP for Hull West and Hessle in 1997. He served as Home Secretary from June 2009 to May 2010, having previously filled
a wide variety of cabinet positions in both the Blair and Brown governments, including Health Secretary and Education Secretary. Following the 2010 election, he was Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer until January 2011. Alan retired as an MP before the 2017 general election after 20 years as an MP.
