RAINWATER MANAGEMENT IT’S
RAINING AGAIN
The versatility of plastic rainwater and drainage solutions will ensure long term performance, adding value in terms of aesthetics and style, as Brett Martin sales director Chris Dawson tells BMJ.

eavy and more frequent rainstorms are becoming the norm as the UK adapts to a changing climate which is why housebuilders and homeowners want sustainable and high- quality drainage solutions that can cope with these demands and manage rainfall where it falls.
Rainwater products design has radically changed over time, with a move towards higher capacity systems to deal with heavy rainfalls which are more frequent due to the atmosphere becoming warmer which in turn, accumulates more water and increases the risk of downpours. Achieving a traditional cast iron rainwater aesthetic on new builds or replacing original systems on heritage buildings has shifted from metal systems to
the use of modern plastic materials which are a fraction of the price to buy, install and maintain and can replace an aluminium or cast-iron rainwater specification to create a heritage aesthetic without compromising architectural integrity. It’s why the Cascade cast iron effect rainwater and soil system from Brett Martin offers a number of gutter profiles, downpipes and hoppers that will provide maximum protection from days of heavy and intense rain.
Specification counts
A critical first step is the correct specification of this vital building component. A useful guide to rainfall intensities for the specification of gutter and downpipes can be found within Building Regulations approved document H:
Drainage and Waste Disposal. The specifier or contractor should consider local weather conditions, the potential impact on the underground drainage layout, the catchment area of the roof, gutter capacity, expansion allowance and fall calculations in any efficient rainwater system design.
Information on calculating the area of a complex roof can be found in BS EN 12056-3: 2000: Roof drainage layout and calculations. After calculating the effective area of the roof, this must relate to the draining capabilities of the rainwater systems specified to ensure the right size and number of components are purchased to achieve the optimum performance. For example, Brett Martin’s Prostyle 106mm gutter system offers the greatest capacity for domestic properties with
