COUNTING THE COST OF ENERGY

HELP DESK

With energy costs spiralling for every UK business, Sam Gottlieb-Hunt, Lead Consultant at Full Power Utilities, the BMF’s new energy partner has advice for members on reducing costs.

OVER THE LAST TWELVE months both domestic and commercial consumers have seen dramatic increases in their energy costs due to spiralling wholesale prices. With costs predicted to rise even higher this winter, it is essential for commercial consumers to fully understand what makes up the cost of their gas and electricity and how their consumption patterns impact the price they pay.

The new tailored BMF Energy Plus service, provided by Full Power Utilities, has been specifically designed for this purpose to help minimise the cost of energy for all BMF members. Energy procurement has changed. With more suppliers to choose from, offering more tailored products, it’s vital that decision makers fully understand the options available to them. The BMF Energy Plus service gives access to a pool of suppliers, including some that do not sell directly to the end user, as well as a range of different procurement strategies – fixed term, mid-term review and flex procurement - to help find the best possible contract for the specific usage of each business.

The team will also look to consolidate the full gas and electricity portfolio to a common contract end date, which both reduces administration and increases collective purchasing power.

Understanding how consumption patterns impact the price of energy is a key factor in the process and the BMF has secured a number of exclusive benefits to help minimise costs.

These include a free energy contract review and a kVA analysis report. The contract review will audit existing energy supply contracts to provide impartial advice on existing tariffs and identify any billing errors. The kVA analysis covers all ‘half hourly’ supply points to ensure allowances are optimally set for full utilisation, and look to reduce any that are not, thus saving money. A further aim is to develop a BMF Buying Basket to harness the collective buying power of the BMF membership to achieve more competitive rates. This is a longer-term project, but the more companies that join the BMF Energy Plus service, the greater its negotiating power will be. As well as minimising what you pay for energy consumption, our service will tailor energy reduction solutions to your business, for example solar installations, LED lighting retrofits and building energy management systems.

Several BMF merchant members are already enjoying the benefits of the Full Power approach.

LBS Builders Merchants has multi energy needs across 29 premises. In a tendering process, Full Power secured them a more competitive quote than three other brokers and worked hard to co-align contracts and arrange new meter connections. All of which saved LBS a great deal of time and money. Elliott Brothers has been a client since 2020. As a growing, multi-site business they were looking to reduce administration time involved in ongoing-contract management as well as securing competitive rates.

This was succecessfully achieved, saving almost £3,000. In addition, a detailed consumption analysis across their portfolio identified kVA reductions on a number of half- hourly electricity meters resulting in a further saving of £3,700.
