SUSTAINABILITY
ENVIRONMENT SAFEGUARDING THE
Darren White, UK country director at Vandersanden, highlights the manufacturers aim to work in a way that safeguards the environment and contributes to a more sustainable building industry.
O
ur new ECO packaging with at least 30% recycled material and 80% less ink, results in 400,000 kg less CO2 each year, equivalent to planting 17,000
trees. We intend to increase that share to 50% recycled materials, which in environmental terms is the equivalent of 58 hectares of forest.
Vandersanden installed wind turbines at our Lanklaar site in Belgium that supply 10,000 MWh of green energy annually. Around 50% of the energy generated is used for activities on site, the remaining energy is offered to the grid as green electricity. We’ve also built a new tunnel kiln in Tolkamer that emits 25% less CO2.
We are making big advances in researching and manufacturing the next generation of sustainable building materials, developing innovations such as new slimmer bricks and brick slips, and new prefab solutions. One of the most significant initiatives that we are preparing for is the manufacture of our innovative new carbon negative bricks. As the construction industry moves towards net zero goals, sustainable building materials have never been more important. The sector is being urged to limit emissions, take part in carbon offsetting projects and take action to decarbonise construction. At Vandersanden
we want to help our customers reach these goals by offering more sustainable options in our range of bricks. Our innovative and sustainable facing bricks, clay pavers, ECO brick slips and (insulating) facade solutions assist builders in their goals to meet these evolving sustainability targets. At Vandersanden we have a long-term view and are continually innovating to create a more sustainable business. We make products that last, and we do this to reduce the potential impact on the environment. We recently published our Collective Well- being report which provides a transparent annual overview of our efforts and results in terms of sustainability, showing that we are on the right track towards CO2 neutrality by 2050. We are fully committed to working in collaboration with our partners to contribute to a more sustainable industry now and in the future. n
