PLUMBING:
SUSTAINABILITY ON TAP
With the green agenda and energy efficiency very much in the news, product lines such as hot water taps can help merchants tap into and respond to a growing requirement for sustainable and low energy kitchen design
energy efficient way than is possible with a traditional kettle. The filter cartridges also tend to have a long life – typically of around six months – and can then be recycled or repurposed by our UK specialist.”

s we all increase our efforts to live more sustainably there is much focus on how our energy is produced and what cars we
drive. Undoubtedly, these things have a very significant impact on the world around us, but smaller changes can also have a big effect in the long-run. For households, reviewing their kitchen habits also makes sense. And this should go much further than ‘just’ reducing food waste and buying organic. There also needs to be a focus on the appliances we choose for our kitchens, and how we use them. And that’s where the merchant, with their knowledge of the options and their sustainable USPs, can really help make an impact.
Tapping into energy efficiency At tap supplier Clearwater, Procurement & Technical Manager, Daniel Boulton says: “While you may think that your focus should be on steering your customers towards energy efficient cooking appliances and white goods, there is another area of the kitchen that deserves some attention in terms of sustainability too, and that is the tap.” Boulton says that hot water that dispense near boiling water at the turn of a lever - are rising in popularity which is good news for the environment and for the merchant who is savvy enough to take stock. “End users most often concentrate on the greater level of convenience that hot water taps bring to the kitchen, and this certainly shouldn’t be understated,” he says. “There’s no longer any need to wait around for a kettle to boil which helps whether you’re preparing the family meal or catching up with friends over coffee. Safety concerns off the boil Consumers often voice concerns around the safety of having such easy access to near- boiling water. However, Boulton says that the Clearwater our hot water taps are designed with dual safety features built-in and when compared to the traditional kettle also make the kitchen and the everyday routine of making a hot drink, a much more accessible task for all. “Unlike a kettle, a hot water tap is in a fixed position, without a cable that can be easily grabbed and pulled by little hands, minimizing the potential for scalding accidents. And there’s no heavy lifting involved, simply turn the level on the tap to fill your favourite cup. Hands-free models, like the Magus 4 Electronic, make the process easier still and are a great option for keen cooks who are less keen on lifting heavy saucepans on and off the boil.”
kettle on the worktop also frees up space and, if the tap also dispenses cold filtered water it means there’s always great tasting refreshment available.”
In addition to this though, and an important focus for merchants and installers, is the energy efficiency aspect of the hot water tap, and therefore the sustainability selling point. Hot water taps use less energy than a conventional kettle and cut down on the potential for wasting water, as it only dispenses the amount of water that is needed, cutting down on wasted energy and water that’s boiled, re-boiled and even re-boiled again. Boulton adds: “A digital thermostatic boiler, like that supplied with Clearwater Kettle taps, will be able to provide up to 60 cups of steaming hot water in an hour in a far more

Consumer concerns allayed; Boulton sys that installers may well approach their trusted merchant with their own worries over fitting such appliances. “While the exact installation process will vary depending on the make and the model chosen, a hot water tap is straightforward to fit. The boiler itself should fit neatly in the under-sink cupboard – a compact model such as those from Clearwater will save room for storage – and it will simply be a case of making the connections to the relevant mains feed,” he says. “ An easy job for any plumber and one that will leave the end user happy with the convenience and with the peace of mind that comes from choosing a sustainable option for their kitchen.” BMJ
