We create solutions that tackle climate change and help the construction industry to deliver net zero in the built
environment. This is important as we know that buildings account for 28 percent of global emissions¹, whilst the built environment is currently responsible for 25% of total UK greenhouse gas emissions when buildings and infrastructure are considered, rising to 42% if surface transport emissions are included2
.
At the core of ROCKWOOL is our range of stone wool insulation products. We transform volcanic rock into stone wool, creating safe and sustainable products that help people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play to thrive. Moreover, because our insulation is made from natural stone, it is possible to recycle stone wool – time and time again - without any loss in performance.
We have a recycling scheme in the UK that is open to all customers, and ROCKWOOL is an accredited member of the Green Compass Scheme which verifies that no product sent to us for recycling ends up in landfill.
Indeed, the inherent recyclability of stone wool also allows us to close the loop in our own production processes. In three quarters of our production facilities globally, including our UK factory, no stone wool waste is sent to landfill. We have also committed to a global target of reducing our total production waste by 85% by 2030.
As of 2021, we had achieved a 51% reduction globally compared to 2015, so we are making tangible progress. In the UK, virtually none of our production waste is sent to landfill.
ROCKWOOL itself is a net carbon negative company in that over the lifetime of its use, the building insulation ROCKWOOL sold in 2021 will save 100 times the carbon emitted in its production. This is thanks to the fact that our stone wool insulation helps maintain a steady indoor temperature, and properly fitted insulation can reduce energy consumption in a building by up to 70%.

We produce BS EN 15804 compliant Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) which are independently third-party verified. Between 2015 and 2020, our EPDs show that the embodied carbon in our products fell by over 24%. The majority of this improvement came in the production process where embodied carbon dropped by 40%. This fall was driven by improved process efficiency, new combustion technologies and a move to 100% renewable electricity in our operations.
