SUSTAINABILITY
ECO-FRIENDLY
laire Briars, Head of Marketing at distributor E.Tupling, says: “We have introduced several new initiatives to enhance recycling, improve energy

efficiency and reduce the impact of waste plastic generated through our operations. We continue to explore numerous opportunities to further reduce and improve our carbon footprint.”
Over the past few years, E.Tupling have switched plastic tapes and packaging to eco- friendly alternatives, for example honeycomb and hive wrap to replace polystyrene padding and plastic wraps, up-cycling manufacturer packaging, using cardboard boxes and paper bags rather than plastic crates and wrapping. They have installed a smart route planning system which strategically clusters deliveries to reduce fuel usage, emissions and maximise traffic efficiency and driving times. Company cars are fully electric and electric car charging points have been installed in the car park to encourage staff to consider switching to electronic vehicle alternatives. In addition, ambitious future plans for the business include potentially switching to a fully electric delivery fleet.
Recycled products
E.Tupling return broken and faulty products to manufacturers to ensure they are recycled. Circular manufacturing is key within our industry, this process maximises production and consumption efficiencies and aims to redefine the current ‘take-make-waste’ linear model. Circular manufacturing involves sharing, reusing, repairing, remanufacturing, and recycling products and materials - with the goal of extending life cycles and reducing overall waste. Paper usage has been reduced by 60% to date by digitising several operational processes, a further 30% reduction is imminent with the introduction of handheld devices which will replace the need for delivery notes. Simply
installing recycling stations throughout each department within the business we have encouraged employee participation in recycling of paper, cans, plastics and glass by over 80%.
Energy consumption is maximised by utilising LED lighting where possible. Sensor switches ensure that lights are switched off in inactive rooms and unoccupied areas. A smart air conditioning system has been installed to enhance energy efficiency for heating and cooling of the premises.
Briars adds: “We have even launched a new tree planting initiative as part of our

commitment to carbon offsetting within the UK. For every 25 reams of paper that the business uses, we plant a new sapling in the UK.
Working in partnership “This is just the start of our eco-journey. We will be looking to expand on this wherever possible and aspire to work in synergy with our manufacturers and customers to maximise sustainability throughout the entire product supply chain; from creation, through packaging, delivery, installation, and end of life recycling.” n
