WOMEN IN INDUSTRY: VISQUEEN

MEETING THE MANAGERS: VISQUEEN

Four managers from Visqueen talk to BMJ about their roles, their experiences and their attitudes towards the industry...

Laura Guy: National Sales Manager at Visqueen.

Tia Rehman: Contract Support Manager in the Southern Region at Visqueen.

ia Rehman, Laura Beveridge, Jen Stainton and Laura Guy are all managers at Visqueen Building Products. Each with their own impact and insight into the company and what it means to be a member of management, they told BMJ about their day-to-day experiences. “The best thing about my role,” says Tia Rehman, contract support manager of Visqueen’s Southern Region, “is managing my own day and developing key relationships with merchants, contractors or end-users.” National account manager, Jen Stainton, agrees “Working with the fantastic merchant customers within the construction sector, sharing hunger for results and planning for a profitable future partnership, developing new relationships and accounts.”

Varied days

“I find the variety of clients and challenges I come across make my role exciting.” says Laura Beveridge, contract support manager of Visqueen in the North and Scotland. “No two days are the same and the daily variations keep me focussed and challenged. In fact the vast array of personalities is significant with a large number of high profile clients, each of whom is different. It can be a challenge to find the right balance of equality whilst tailoring the solution to the individuals’ needs.”

“I have the pleasure of being the manager of the commercial team, which is all female, a rarity in the construction industry but we all get on and work well together. I’d have to say the ‘buzz’ of the sale is my favourite thing about my role. Having spent only four years in external sales, there’s still nothing more exciting than getting ‘that order’ or hitting budget,” says Laura Guy, national sales manager. “Believe it or not, this is the first time in my working life that I’ve been part of an all-female team.” says Stainton. “The sense of team is

incredible. We have a driven and supportive manager and we all bring skills from different places and in our own ways are all extremely ambitious and competitive!”

“Visqueen has a good team ethic and we can always rely on each-other for support when needed. We work together with key accounts and strategy, but have also developed good friendships along the way.” adds Rehman. “I’ve only been in this role since January 2018” Guy says, “It’s the first time I have managed an external sales team. I’d definitely say people management has been the biggest challenge so far. Purely because everyone is so different and you have to find the most effective way of managing everyone to the best of their and your ability.”

“I cover the whole of the UK looking after our national merchants and this is a huge task in itself. I’d love to be able to cram two weeks into one.” says Stainton. “On the plus side it means that I am constantly prioritising and assessing where the value of my time is best spent. We support merchants by developing lasting relationships and trust by identifying shared goals and planning the development of the account, using branch visits, regular communication and our Key Account Plan.” “We have one of, if not the, best stockist models within the industry.” Guy explains. “The Visqueen Specialist Centre model allows merchants and distributors to become specialist stockists in their chosen field. In return for one commitment of taking in and maintaining a recommended stock profile, we offer an 8 point commitment charter; ranging from technical support via on-site assistance, training and regulation guidance through to commercial support with lead generation, website listings and regular views conducted by a dedicated member of the commercial team.”
