SUSTAINABILITY
It also smooths the way (and reduces any bureaucracy) should there be an issue which leads to a product being returned,” he says. A warranty may even help to ‘sell’ a product, particularly if it appears very generous in terms of the period covered or the extent of the cover offered. But equally, Vincent continues, overly generous terms (e.g. 15 years+) can and probably should raise questions about whether to believe the promise on offer, or whether this is a case of ‘over-selling’.
“In this instance, a wise merchant and buyer will want to clarify with the manufacturer any caveats that could invalidate customer claims over that
period. It might also be helpful to read customer reviews online, and/or stock product from manufacturers that have extra customer protection in place, such as a code of conduct.
Customer questions
There is little or no research as to how many customers pay close attention to warranties at point of purchase or how much influence they bring to bear on a sale, Vincent says, however, it’s a fair bet that close to all customers will want to review them when or if there is an issue.
Customers may satill want to know: : • How long does the warranty last?
This varies greatly, of course, as do the conditions that might void the coverage • What happens if this product fails? It’s worth checking if a warranty offers a repair, replacement product or refund. • What repairs are covered? Again, what is included/excluded varies enormously. Some warranties require customers to pay for labour. It’s also worth understanding how products are assessed by manufacturers if there is an issue (will they send out an engineer, for example?) • Will the warranty cover the cost of associated issues which occur as a result of a product failure (e.g. localised flooding or pollution)? Likely not; customers may want to get additional (insurance) cover for such eventualities
• Check they understand the terms of the warranty
• Keep the warranty in a safe place • Consider the (long-standing) reputation of the manufacturer • Keep the receipt
• Follow the installation and service/ maintenance instructions from the manufacturer. A good warranty is more than a symbolic piece of paper.
“As we have indicated, it demonstrates the company’s willingness to throw its weight
behind its product claims, although for a warranty to remain valid, the manufacturer must still be trading. Merchants may feel a greater sense of reassurance from stocking items from companies who have been trading successfully for a lengthy period,” Vincent continues.
“The lack of empirical evidence may make it hard to quantify the importance of warranties to customers. However, it is surely true that a good warranty clearly indicates just how much value a manufacturer places on buyer satisfaction and service delivery. “It is certainly something that we at Kingspan Klargester have taken very seriously indeed over the last 65 years and remains embedded in our code of conduct, our company values and at the centre of our value proposition.” BMJ
MARSH SUDS SAFE PROVIDES SURETY
Off-mains drainage specialist Marsh Industries has announced the launch of the ‘SuDS SAFE’ Hydroil oil separator range.
A
s the world focuses on more green and environmentally friendly solutions Marsh Industries has been examining how effective their separators are when incorporating them into sustainable drainage schemes.
The company tested their Hydroil separator range for total suspended solids and metal mitigation indices in line with the British Water Code of Practice testing procedures. This is in addition to an existing test procedure, whereby the Hydroil has already achieved EN858-1 certification for light liquid separators.
Combining these two test sets together and applying the Ciria SuDS manual simple index approach to proprietary/manufactured storm water treatment devices, the Hydroil separator range is able to achieve the following mitigation indices:
Hydrocarbons: 97.5%
Total Suspended Solids: 84.35% Total Metal Reduction: 63.26% These results will provide user confidence that the testing of this range is beyond reproach and cements these products as the complete surface water treatment solution for SuDS schemes.
Marsh managing director, Steve Boyer, who oversaw the testing procedures said “It is almost a given notion that our products have a positive effect on the environment, however over the past 12 months, we have received an increasing amount of requests from all sectors asking us for independently verified testing of our products that demonstrates their environmental impact. We have over 15 certificates across our full range of products that also features fire testing and rigorous material impact testing.”

“For our Hydroil oil separators, we worked with PIA, in Germany, as well as UK trade bodies; having submitted our test results to British Water over three months ago, and we are extremely pleased to present some outstanding mitigation ratios for our range.” “These mitigation ratios highlight how the Hydroil separator range provides a unique opportunity for specifiers and end users where a complete water treatment solution is required in a SuDS scheme.”
