SUSTAINABILITY
must ensure they are aware of how drainage can help protect wildlife. Guidance systems, tunnels, conveyance channels, escape ladders, wildlife kerbs, nesting boxes, and wildlife refuges can all be used to mitigate the impact construction may have on surrounding habitats.
The Environment Bill will put the onus on developers to understand the prosperity of natural systems. For merchants, it is crucial that their knowledge is up-to-date, as it can offer an opportunity to increase revenue through proactive sales and competitive advantage. ACO recently supported the industry with a free Super Amphibian Highways webinar – available on demand – looking at the various factors affecting biodiversity, Collins says.
Sustainable developments For the housebuilding market, sustainability is also going to increase in importance, placing emphasis on the whole supply chain to deliver sustainable solutions. “Some housebuilders are now looking to utilise products made from recycled materials, such as our ACO Vienite®, which is a polymeric based recycled material, which has the equivalent performance characteristics to polymer concrete,” Collins adds.
When discussing recycled materials with
potential customers, there are often concerns that they are not as durable as other products, he explains. “Vienite retains all the high performance flexural and compressive strength characteristics of polymer concrete, while remaining recyclable. It can be collected, processed and returned for re-use as raw material, making it a viable sustainable solution for project managers.
“As urbanisation dictates that homes
continue to be built in flood-prone areas, there is a significant amount of work to be done in mitigating that risk. Likewise, there is greater pressure than ever to ensure biodiversity and sustainability within projects, which is why ACO Water Management has a dedicated training for merchants to understand the latest developments.” BMJ
