As well as being anti-algae, Millboard decking is also incredibly stain-resistant due to the non-porous surface, so even stubborn stains such as tomato sauce or wine just wipe off with soapy water within a short time frame. This ease of cleaning means the product appeals to a wide range of customers, from busy pub chains like Weatherspoon’s, who use it for their outdoor seating areas, to London Zoo. “If you are putting a lot of raw meat out – like in the lion enclosure, you will appreciate the fact that the product can simply be washed down and hosed, even with a pressure washer”.


This longevity and ease of maintenance is one of the most compelling reasons as to why the product has been consistently chosen by hotels, luxury properties and iconic builds. Millboard’s portfolio includes the ground- breaking ‘Republic’ in the East India Docks, Channel 4 Studios and the Floating Pocket Park at London’s Paddington Basin. The revolutionary decking has also drawn a lot of attention from awarding bodies and the media. Jackson touches on some of the highlights of recent years, ‘We’ve been recognised as one of the Top 1000 Businesses to Inspire Britain and one of the top 50 companies in Coventry and Warwickshire. We’ve featured on Grand Designs, Love your Garden and Ugly House to Lovely House too.’ It’s fair to say that Millboard decking is definitely a proven product. And it’s not just about looks. Jackson describes how the company’s forward-thinking attitude also extends to thinking about installation and about how to increase the design potential of the boards. ”For a start, it can be butt jointed owing to the product’s minimal movement - there’s no having to allow


for excessive expansion like timber. You can even mitre the corners on a deck and glue the corners together. It is fixed in very much the same way as you’d fix a timber deck, but with a special Millboard Durafix screw through the surface. Because of the special properties of the elastomer coating, the screw cannot be seen on the surface of the board, only leaving a minimal witness hole.” The practicalities of the system are also well thought out. “Replacing a board on a clip-fitted deck system means having to go to the end and remove all the boards in order to get to the one that is affected. With Millboard decking, you just prise the board up and the screw will be stuck in the sub frame. Then you just take the screw out, turn the board round and refit it.”


The first design that Millboard went to market with in 2007, was its Weathered Oak range, which uses genuine French antique railway carriage floor timbers to create the mould. “We have a number of moulds, so every product is slightly different. This means you get the more natural ambience of timber, as opposed to the uniformity you get with composite decking.”


Enhanced grain


A more contemporary design followed, the Enhanced Grain range, which is incredibly popular, though Jackson argues that the original Weathered Oak holds a special place in the hearts of customers. “Rather like the Victorian bath in the corner of the showroom, we find that it’s the Weathered Oak that attracts customers more than any other option.”


Given the family-owned background, it’s no surprise that Jackson describes the company as “relationship driven” – even now that it’s expanded to a business with multiple global territories. He continues that Millboard’s


approach “is to foster and maintain excellent working relationships with installers and distributors”.


“We are always keen to demonstrate a two- way commitment to those we work with. By dint of working with Millboard, they become part of the broader Millboard family and we are thrilled to have them on board. We supply a suite of tools to make working with Millboard as simple as possible - our easy to use online decking calculator, for example, enables the merchant or installer to quote the job easily.” “We also create native marketing material and develop in-country relationships with all of our global distributors. From the heat and extreme temperature changes of Perth Western Australia, to the freezing temperatures of Scandinavia and Russia, we’ll ensure that our distributors in those territories feel as much part of Millboard as those working from our Coventry-based HQ.”

It’s also testament to our training that some of our Approved Installers include industry award winners, with many achieving TV exposure over the last 12 months.” The company achieves healthy sales for their distributors by supplying potential customers with generous and high-quality sample packs, as well as a tool on their website so potential customers can easily find a stockist or an Approved Installer.
