BUILDERS MERCHANTS JOURNAL
Take your pick
It’s exam season for those of us with school-age children month’s column will be multiple choice.
A device which also gets me around the age-old problem of hav- ing to write something pre-election for consumption post-election. Delete/ignore/agree with as ap- propriate: A: Wow. We didn’t expect that. Once again the pre-election polls were wrong and the new incum- bent of 10 Downing Street is Mr Tim Farron, nice-but-clearly not as-dim- as-I-have-painted-him-Tim, having single-handedly resurrected the Lib- Dems with one perfect paragraph at the end of a TV debate. Back to the referendum booth for us then. B: Ho hum. So Teresa May was right. The only way to ensure that we get what we want out of our exit from the EU is for the Tories to have a stonking great majority in the House of Commons. Bye-bye Mr Corbyn. It was nice - sort of - know- ing you, but your 70s rhetoric has no place in the hard-nosed, hard-assed political world of 2017.
Of course, we are also going to have to wave bye-bye to the NHS, any kind of decent state-funded edu- cation and our homes, should our elderly ailments be cerebral rather than physical. But the electorate clearly isn’t worried about that.

C: Well, Teresa May really cocked that one up didn’t she? The point of an election is that you give the peo- ple the chance to tell you what they want. And if you aren’t what they want because you’ve been doing your best Cruella-de-Vil impression in the run-up to it, that’s your own fault. Better get packing, missus, as Jeremy Corbyn’s already heading for Downing Street with his battered student backpack, thanks to the young people that registered in their thousands to give themselves a voice. Let’s hope he’s brought some MiracleGro for that magic money- tree he’s going to need. D: Another coalition Government. Maybe this time both parties can actually work together positively, in- E: It seems Mrs May took David Cameron’s landslide majority and hacked it to pieces. So much for go- ing through Brexit negotiations with a strong mandate. She’s got even less of one than she had before. Nice one. May got in by the skin of her teeth and it’s her own fault. Lady, let this be a lesson for you - yes, social care needs to be paid for, but you screw around with your core voters at your peril. F: An SNP landslide and another Scottish independence referendum on the cards. Sigh.
